Haftarah · Isaiah 42:5–43:10

Haftarah

הפטרה

This is the haftarah for Bereishit in most years. Chabad and Sephardic communities read Isaiah 42:5–21; Ashkenazi communities continue through 43:10. When Shabbat Bereishit falls on the day before Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, Machar Chodesh is read instead.

42:5Thus says God, Hashem, He who created the heavens and stretched them out; He who spread forth the earth and that which comes out of it; He who gives breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to those who walk in it:

Koh-amar ha'el Adonai bore hashamayim venoteihem roka ha'aretz vetze'etza'eha noten neshamah la'am aleha veruaḥ laholeḥim bah.

Haftarah on Erev Rosh Chodesh · 1 Samuel 20:18–42

Haftarah: Machar Chodesh

מחר חדש

Machar Chodesh (“Tomorrow is the new moon”) replaces the regular haftarah when Shabbat Bereishit falls on 29 Tishrei, the day before Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan. Shabbat Bereishit never falls on Rosh Chodesh itself.

20:18Then Yehonatan said to David, “Tomorrow is the new moon (Rosh Chodesh); and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty.

Vayomer-lo Yehonatan maḥar ḥodesh venifkadta ki yipaked moshaveḥa.

20:19And when you have stayed three days, then you shall go down quickly, and come to the place where you hid yourself when the matter was in hand, and shall remain by the stone Ezel.

20:21And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I expressly say unto the lad, ‘Behold, the arrows are on this side of you, take them,’ then come; for there is peace to you, and no harm, as Hashem lives.

20:30Then Shaul’s anger was kindled against Yehonatan, and he said unto him, “You son of the perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Yishai to your own shame, and unto the shame of your mother’s nakedness?

20:32And Yehonatan answered Shaul his father, and said unto him, “Why should he be put to death? What has he done?”

20:33And Shaul cast a spear at him to strike him; by which Yehonatan knew that it was determined by his father to put David to death.

20:34So Yehonatan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month; for he was grieved for David, because his father had put him to shame.
