V’Zot HaBerachah is not read on a Shabbat: it is read on Simchat Torah, when the reading of the Torah is completed and begun again. At Shabbat Minchah on Shabbat Ha’azinu, the beginning of V’Zot HaBerachah is read in three aliyot: 33:1–7, 33:8–12 and 33:13–17.

33:1And this is the blessing with which Moshe (Moses) the man of God blessed the children of Yisrael (Israel) before his death.

33:1Y esta es la bendición con la cual bendijo Moshé (Moisés), varón de Dios, a los hijos de Yisrael (Israel), antes que muriese.

Chatan Torah · Deuteronomy 33:27–34:12

Chatan Torah

חתן תורה

The last aliyah of the Torah is given to the Chatan Torah, “the bridegroom of the Torah”. It ends with the death of Moshe and the words “there arose not a prophet since in Yisrael like unto Moshe, whom Hashem knew face to face” (34:10). The congregation then says Chazak, chazak, venitchazek.

33:27The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and He thrust out the enemy from before you, and said, ‘Destroy!’

33:27El eterno Dios es tu refugio, y abajo están los brazos eternos; él echó de delante de ti al enemigo, y dijo: “¡Destruye!”.

33:27శాశ్వతుడైన దేవుడు నీకు ఆశ్రయము; నిత్యముగనుండు బాహువులు నీ క్రిందనుండును; ఆయన నీ యెదుటనుండి శత్రువును వెళ్లగొట్టి ‘నశింపజేయుము’ అనెను.

Chatan Bereishit

חתן בראשית

From a second Torah scroll the reading begins again at the beginning, so that the Torah is never left unfinished. This aliyah is given to the Chatan Bereishit, “the bridegroom of Bereishit”. The same verses open Parashat Bereishit.

1:1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

1:1En el principio creó Dios los cielos y la tierra.

1:2Y la tierra estaba desordenada y vacía, y las tinieblas estaban sobre la faz del abismo, y el Espíritu de Dios se movía sobre la faz de las aguas.

1:2భూమి నిరాకారముగాను శూన్యముగాను ఉండెను; చీకటి అగాధ జలముపైన కమ్మియుండెను; దేవుని ఆత్మ జలములపైన అల్లాడుచుండెను.

Haftarah

הפטרה

The Torah ends with the death of Moshe; the haftarah continues the story: “Moshe My servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Yarden” (1:2), and “Be strong and of a good courage” (1:9). Ashkenazi communities, Chabad among them, read Joshua 1:1–18; Sephardic communities end at verse 9.

1:1Now after the death of Moshe the servant of Hashem it came to pass, that Hashem spoke unto Yehoshua the son of Nun, Moshe’s minister, saying,

1:1Y aconteció después de la muerte de Moshé, siervo de Hashem, que Hashem habló a Yehoshúa hijo de Nun, ministro de Moshé, diciendo:

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim): the Westminster Leningrad Codex, from the open-source Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Spanish translation
The Reina-Valera 1909 (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English: older spellings and verb forms are updated (“á” to “a,” “bendecirte he” to “te bendeciré”), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Spanish name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Avram (Abram)), the Divine Name (“Jehová” in the Reina-Valera) is written “Hashem,” and “Dios” (Elohim) is unchanged. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
Telugu translation
The Telugu Old Version of the Bible Society of India (Satyavedamu, public domain), lightly updated by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English and Spanish: the Divine Name (“యెహోవా” in the Old Version) is written “హషేమ్” (Hashem), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Telugu name in parentheses the first time (e.g., అవ్రామ్ (అబ్రాము)), quotation marks are added, and words damaged in the digital source text are restored. The classical style of the Old Version is kept. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
