Haftarah · Isaiah 43:21–44:23

Haftarah

Vayikra opens the laws of the offerings. In the haftarah Hashem tells Yisrael that He asked no burden of them, yet “you have not brought Me the small cattle of your burnt offerings” (43:23); instead “you have made Me to serve with your sins” (43:24). Forgiveness, like the atonement of Leviticus 4–5, comes from Him: “I, even I, am He that blots out your transgressions for My own sake” (43:25). Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities read the same verses. On Shabbat Zachor or Shabbat HaChodesh the special haftarah is read instead.

43:21“This people I have formed for Myself; they shall show forth My praise.

Am-zu yatzarti li tehilati yesaperu.

Maftir for Shabbat Zachor · Deuteronomy 25:17–19

Maftir: Shabbat Zachor

Shabbat Zachor is the Shabbat before Purim. In a leap year it is often Shabbat Vayikra (in other years Shabbat Tetzaveh or Terumah). A second Torah scroll is taken out for this Maftir: the command to remember what Amalek did to Yisrael on the way out of Mitzrayim. Many read the word for “remembrance” in verse 19 twice, as zecher and as zeicher.

25:17Remember what Amalek did unto you by the way, when you came forth out of Mitzrayim (Egypt);

Zaḥor et asher-asah leḥa Amalek badereḥ betzeteḥem miMitzrayim.

25:18how he met you by the way, and struck the hindmost of you, all that were feeble behind you, when you were faint and weary; and he did not fear God.

25:19Therefore it shall be, when Hashem your God has given you rest from all your enemies round about, in the land which Hashem your God gives you for an inheritance to possess it, that you shall blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; you shall not forget it.

Zachor Haftarah · 1 Samuel 15:1–34

Haftarah: Shabbat Zachor

Read on Shabbat Zachor instead of Isaiah 43–44. Ashkenazi communities, Chabad among them, begin at 1 Samuel 15:2; Sephardic communities begin at 15:1. Shmuel tells Sha’ul to destroy Amalek, but Sha’ul spares Agag the king of Amalek (15:8–9). Haman, the enemy of the Jews in the Purim story, is called “the Agagite” (Esther 3:1).

15:1And Shmuel (Samuel) said unto Sha’ul (Saul), “Hashem sent me to anoint you to be king over His people, over Yisrael; now therefore hearken unto the voice of the words of Hashem.

Vayomer Shemu'el el-Sha'ul oti shalaḥ Adonai limshaḥaḥa lemeleḥ al-amo al-Yisra'el ve'atah shema lekol divrei Adonai.

Ashkenazi communities, Chabad among them, begin here: 1 Samuel 15:2–34

15:2Thus says Hashem of hosts: I remember that which Amalek did to Yisrael, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Mitzrayim.

15:4And Sha’ul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Tela’im (Telaim), two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Yehudah (Judah).

Maftir: Shabbat HaChodesh

Shabbat HaChodesh is the Shabbat on or before Rosh Chodesh Nisan. When it is Shabbat Vayikra, it is Rosh Chodesh Nisan itself, and three Torah scrolls are read: six aliyot from Vayikra, the seventh from Numbers 28:9–15, and then this Maftir: “This month shall be unto you the beginning of months” (12:2), and the laws of the Pesach offering.

12:1And Hashem spoke unto Moshe and Aharon in the land of Mitzrayim, saying,

Vayomer Adonai el-Mosheh ve'el-Aharon be'eretz Mitzrayim lemor.

12:2“This month shall be unto you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you.

12:3Speak unto all the congregation of Yisrael, saying, On the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for a house;

12:4and if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.

Haftarah: Shabbat HaChodesh

Read on Shabbat HaChodesh instead of Isaiah 43–44. On the first day of the first month the sanctuary is cleansed (45:18), and on the fourteenth day “you shall have the Pesach” (45:21). Communities begin and end this haftarah at different verses, as marked below. Because Shabbat HaChodesh Vayikra is Rosh Chodesh Nisan, many communities add the first and last verses of the Rosh Chodesh haftarah (Isaiah 66:1 and 66:23).

45:16“All the people of the land shall give this offering for the prince in Yisrael.

45:17And it shall be the prince’s part to give burnt offerings, and meal offerings, and drink offerings, in the feasts, and in the new moons, and on the Shabbatot, in all the appointed feasts of the house of Yisrael; he shall prepare the sin offering, and the meal offering, and the burnt offering, and the peace offerings, to make atonement for the house of Yisrael.”

Chabad and Sephardic communities begin here: Ezekiel 45:18

45:18Thus says the Lord Hashem: “In the first month, on the first day of the month, you shall take a young bullock without blemish, and cleanse the sanctuary;

Koh-amar Adonai Elohim barishon be'eḥad laḥodesh tikaḥ par-ben-bakar tamim veḥiteta et-hamikdash.

Rosh Chodesh Haftarah · Isaiah 66:1–24, 23

Haftarah: Shabbat Rosh Chodesh

On Rosh Chodesh Nisan the HaChodesh haftarah is read, and many communities add only the first and last verses of this one (66:1 and 66:23); it is given here for reference. In other years, after the last verse, verse 23 is read again, so that the haftarah ends with “from one new moon to another, and from one Shabbat to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me” (66:23).

66:1Thus says Hashem: The heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool; where is the house that you build unto Me? And where is the place of My rest?

Koh amar Adonai hashamayim kis'i veha'aretz hadom raglay ei-zeh vayit asher tivnu-li ve'ei-zeh makom menuḥati.

66:2For all those things My hand has made, and so all those things came to be, says Hashem; but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembles at My word.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
