Haftarah · Isaiah 55:6–56:8

Haftarah

הפטרה

“Seek Hashem while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near” (55:6). Some calendars list this as the haftarah of Vayelech, but it is hardly ever read with it: when Vayelech is read on its own it always falls on Shabbat Shuva, between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and the Shabbat Shuva haftarah is read; when Nitzavim and Vayelech are read together, the haftarah of Nitzavim is read. Ashkenazi communities read these verses at Minchah on public fast days.

55:6Seek Hashem while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.

55:6Buscad a Hashem mientras puede ser hallado, llamadle en tanto que está cercano.

55:6హషేమ్ మీకు దొరుకు కాలమునందు ఆయనను వెదకుడి, ఆయన సమీపములో ఉండగా ఆయనను వేడుకొనుడి.

Dirshu Adonai behimatz'o kera'uhu bihyoto karov.

ודִּרְשׁ֥וּ יְהוָ֖ה בְּהִמָּצְא֑וֹ קְרָאֻ֖הוּ בִּֽהְיוֹת֥וֹ קָרֽוֹב׃

55:7Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return unto Hashem, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.

55:8“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” says Hashem.

55:8«Porque mis pensamientos no son vuestros pensamientos, ni vuestros caminos mis caminos», dice Hashem.

55:8“నా తలంపులు మీ తలంపులవంటివి కావు, మీ త్రోవలు నా త్రోవలవంటివి కావు” అని హషేమ్ సెలవిచ్చుచున్నాడు.

Haftarah: Shabbat Shuva

הפטרת שבת שובה

Shabbat Shuva, “the Shabbat of Return”, is the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, named for the first word of this haftarah: “O Yisrael, return unto Hashem your God” (14:2). When Vayelech is read on its own (about four years in ten), it is always Shabbat Shuva, and this haftarah is read. Customs differ in what follows Hosea: many Ashkenazi communities add Joel 2:15–27 (“Blow the shofar in Tziyon, sanctify a fast”, 2:15); Sephardic communities add Micah 7:18–20 (“Who is a God like unto You, that pardons iniquity”, 7:18); many communities, Chabad among them, read all three.

14:2O Yisrael, return unto Hashem your God; for you have fallen by your iniquity.

14:2Vuélvete, oh Yisrael, a Hashem tu Dios; porque por tu pecado has caído.

Then Micah 7:18–20

7:18Who is a God like unto You, that pardons iniquity, and passes by the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger for ever, because He delights in mercy.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim): the Westminster Leningrad Codex, from the open-source Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Spanish translation
The Reina-Valera 1909 (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English: older spellings and verb forms are updated (“á” to “a,” “bendecirte he” to “te bendeciré”), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Spanish name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Avram (Abram)), the Divine Name (“Jehová” in the Reina-Valera) is written “Hashem,” and “Dios” (Elohim) is unchanged. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
Telugu translation
The Telugu Old Version of the Bible Society of India (Satyavedamu, public domain), lightly updated by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English and Spanish: the Divine Name (“యెహోవా” in the Old Version) is written “హషేమ్” (Hashem), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Telugu name in parentheses the first time (e.g., అవ్రామ్ (అబ్రాము)), quotation marks are added, and words damaged in the digital source text are restored. The classical style of the Old Version is kept. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
