First Portion

At Shabbat Minchah on Shabbat Vayeshev, and on Monday and Thursday mornings, this first portion of Miketz is read in three aliyot: 41:1–4, 41:5–7 and 41:8–14.

41:1And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Par’oh (Pharaoh) dreamed; and, behold, he stood by the river.

Vayehi miketz shenatayim yamim uFar'oh ḥolem vehineh omed al-haye'or.

41:2And, behold, there came up out of the river seven cows, handsome to look at and fat of flesh; and they fed in a meadow.

Vehineh min-haye'or olot sheva parot yefot mar'eh uveri'ot basar vatir'enah ba'aḥu.

41:3And, behold, seven other cows came up after them out of the river, ugly to look at and lean of flesh; and stood by the other cows upon the bank of the river.

Vehineh sheva parot aḥerot olot aḥareihen min-haye'or ra'ot mar'eh vedakot basar vata'amodenah etzel haparot al-sefat haye'or.

41:4And the ugly and lean-fleshed cows ate up the seven handsome and fat cows. So Par’oh awoke.

Vatoḥalnah haparot ra'ot hamar'eh vedakot habasar et sheva haparot yefot hamar'eh vehaberi'ot vayikatz Par'oh.

41:5And he slept and dreamed the second time; and, behold, seven ears of grain came up upon one stalk, plump and good.

Vayishan vayaḥalom shenit vehineh sheva shibolim olot bekaneh eḥad beri'ot vetovot.

41:6And, behold, seven thin ears, blasted with the east wind, sprang up after them.

Vehineh sheva shibolim dakot ushedufot kadim tzomeḥot aḥareihen.

41:7And the seven thin ears swallowed up the seven plump and full ears. And Par’oh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream.

Vativla'na hashibolim hadakot et sheva hashibolim haberi'ot vehamele'ot vayikatz Par'oh vehineh ḥalom.

41:8And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Mitzrayim (Egypt), and all its wise men; and Par’oh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Par’oh.

Vayehi vaboker vatipa'em ruḥo vayishlaḥ vayikra et-kol-ḥartumei Mitzrayim ve'et-kol-ḥaḥameha vayesaper Par'oh lahem et-ḥalomo ve'ein-poter otam leFar'oh.

41:9Then the chief cupbearer spoke unto Par’oh, saying, “I do remember my faults this day:

Vayedaber sar hamashkim et-Par'oh lemor et-ḥata'ay ani mazkir hayom.

41:11and we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream.

Vanaḥalmah ḥalom belaylah eḥad ani vahu ish kefitron ḥalomo ḥalamenu.

41:12And there was there with us a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he interpreted.

41:13And it came to pass, as he interpreted to us, so it was; me he restored unto my office, and him he hanged.”

Vayehi ka'asher patar-lanu ken hayah oti heshiv al-kani ve'oto talah.

41:14Then Par’oh sent and called Yosef (Joseph), and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon; and he shaved himself, and changed his garments, and came in unto Par’oh.

Vayishlaḥ Par'oh vayikra et-Yosef vayeritzuhu min-habor vayegalaḥ vayeḥalef simlotav vayavo el-Par'oh.

Haftarah · 1 Kings 3:15–4:1

Haftarah

Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities read the same haftarah. It is read only when Shabbat Miketz falls after Chanukah, about one year in ten. Shlomo “awoke, and, behold, it was a dream” (3:15), as Par’oh “awoke, and, behold, it was a dream” (Genesis 41:7); and as Par’oh saw “the spirit of God” in Yosef (41:38), all Yisrael saw “the wisdom of God” in Shlomo (3:28). During Chanukah the haftarah for Shabbat Chanukah is read instead, or on its eighth day the haftarah for the second Shabbat of Chanukah.

3:15And Shlomo (Solomon) awoke; and, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered up burnt offerings, and offered peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants.

Maftir: Shabbat Chanukah

Shabbat Miketz almost always falls during Chanukah. Then a second Torah scroll is read for the Maftir: the princes’ offerings for that day of Chanukah. On the third day it is Numbers 7:24–29; on the fourth, 7:30–35; on the sixth (Rosh Chodesh, from a third scroll), 7:42–47; on the seventh, 7:48–53; and on the eighth, 7:54–8:4. These verses tell of the dedication (chanukat hamizbe’ach, 7:84) of the altar in the wilderness, and end with the lighting of the menorah.

Seventh Portion: Shabbat Rosh Chodesh

When Shabbat Miketz is Rosh Chodesh Tevet (the sixth day of Chanukah), three Torah scrolls are read: six aliyot from Miketz (the Sixth through Genesis 44:17), this Seventh aliyah for Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh, and the Chanukah Maftir, Numbers 7:42–47. The haftarah is still the haftarah for Shabbat Chanukah.

Haftarah on Shabbat Chanukah · Zechariah 2:14–4:7

Haftarah: Shabbat Chanukah

Read instead of the regular haftarah when Shabbat Miketz falls during Chanukah, except on its eighth day. On Shabbat Rosh Chodesh some communities also add the first and last verses of the Rosh Chodesh haftarah (Isaiah 66). Zechariah sees a menorah all of gold (4:2) and hears the word to Zerubbavel: “Not by might, nor by power, but by My spirit” (4:6).

2:14“Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Tziyon (Zion); for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in your midst,” says Hashem.

2:15“And many nations shall join themselves to Hashem in that day, and shall be My people; and I will dwell in your midst, and you shall know that Hashem of hosts has sent me unto you.

Haftarah on the Second Shabbat of Chanukah · 1 Kings 7:40–50

Haftarah: Second Shabbat of Chanukah

Read when Shabbat Miketz is the eighth day of Chanukah (Zot Chanukah), the second Shabbat of Chanukah. Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities read the same haftarah. Chiram finishes the work of the Temple, and Shlomo makes its golden vessels, among them ten menorahs of pure gold (7:49).

7:40And Chiram (Hiram) made the lavers, and the shovels, and the basins. So Chiram finished doing all the work that he made for King Shlomo in the house of Hashem:

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Binyamin (Benjamin)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
