First Portion
At Shabbat Minchah on Shabbat Noach, and on Monday and Thursday mornings, this first portion of Lech Lecha is read in three aliyot: 12:1–3, 12:4–9 and 12:10–13.
12:1Now Hashem had said unto Avram (Abram), “Go forth from your country, and from your kindred, and from your father’s house, unto a land that I will show you.
Vayomer Adonai el-Avram leḥ-leḥa me'artzeḥa umimoladteḥa umibeit aviḥa el-ha'aretz asher ar'eka.
אוַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־אַבְרָ֔ם לֶךְ־לְךָ֛ מֵֽאַרְצְךָ֥ וּמִמּֽוֹלַדְתְּךָ֖ וּמִבֵּ֣ית אָבִ֑יךָ אֶל־הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אַרְאֶֽךָּ׃
12:2And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing.
Ve'e'esḥa legoy gadol va'avareḥḥa va'agadelah shemeḥa veheyeh beraḥah.
בוְאֶֽעֶשְׂךָ֙ לְג֣וֹי גָּד֔וֹל וַֽאֲבָ֣רֶכְךָ֔ וַֽאֲגַדְּלָ֖ה שְׁמֶ֑ךָ וֶֽהְיֵ֖ה בְּרָכָֽה׃
12:3And I will bless those who bless you, and curse him who curses you; and in you shall all families of the earth be blessed.”
Va'avareḥah mevaraḥeḥa umekalelḥa a'or venivreḥu veḥa kol mishpeḥot ha'adamah.

12:4So Avram departed, as Hashem had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him. And Avram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Charan (Haran).

12:5And Avram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Charan; and they went forth to go into the land of Kena’an (Canaan); and into the land of Kena’an they came.

12:6And Avram passed through the land unto the place of Shechem (Sichem), unto the plain of Moreh. And the Kena’ani (Canaanite) was then in the land.

12:7And Hashem appeared unto Avram, and said, “Unto your seed will I give this land.” And there he built an altar unto Hashem, who appeared unto him.

12:8And he moved from there unto a mountain on the east of Beit-El (Bethel), and pitched his tent, having Beit-El on the west, and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar unto Hashem, and called upon the name of Hashem.

Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities read the same haftarah. It speaks to Yisrael as “the seed of Avraham My friend” (41:8), called “from the ends of the earth,” and tells them, “Fear not.” In 40:31 Chabad’s text also notes an alternate spelling (נ״א), shown in small type.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Avram (Abram)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
- Transliteration
- Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
- Aliyot & haftarot
- Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
- Hebrew font
- SBL Hebrew, by the Society of Biblical Literature.
