First Portion

ראשון

At Shabbat Minchah on Shabbat Bo, and on Monday and Thursday mornings, this first portion of Beshalach is read in three aliyot: 13:17–22, 14:1–4 and 14:5–8.

13:17And it came to pass, when Par’oh (Pharaoh) had let the people go, that God did not lead them through the way of the land of the Pelishtim (Philistines), although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people repent when they see war, and they return to Mitzrayim (Egypt).”

Vayehi beshalaḥ Par'oh et-ha'am velo-naḥam Elohim dereḥ eretz Pelishtim ki karov hu ki amar Elohim pen-yinaḥem ha'am bir'otam milḥamah veshavu Mitzraymah.

13:18But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Yam Suf (Red Sea); and the children of Yisrael (Israel) went up armed out of the land of Mitzrayim.

Vayasev Elohim et-ha'am dereḥ hamidbar yam-Suf vaḥamushim alu venei-Yisra'el me'eretz Mitzrayim.

13:19And Moshe (Moses) took the bones of Yosef (Joseph) with him; for he had strictly sworn the children of Yisrael, saying, “God will surely visit you; and you shall carry up my bones away from here with you.”

Vayikaḥ Mosheh et-atzmot Yosef imo ki hashbea hishbia et-benei Yisra'el lemor pakod yifkod Elohim etḥem veha'alitem et-atzmotay mizeh iteḥem.

14:2“Speak unto the children of Yisrael, that they turn and encamp before Pi HaChirot (Pi-hahiroth), between Migdol and the sea, over against Baal Tzefon (Baal-zephon); before it shall you encamp by the sea.

Fourth Portion

רביעי

The Song at the Sea (15:1–18) is chanted by the reader with its own melody, and the congregation stands.

14:26And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.”

Vayomer Adonai el-Mosheh neteh et-yadeḥa al-hayam veyashuvu hamayim al-Mitzrayim al-riḥbo ve'al-parashav.

14:27And Moshe stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and Hashem overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

Haftarah · Judges 4:4–5:31

Haftarah

הפטרה

Ashkenazi communities, Chabad among them, read Judges 4:4–5:31. Sephardic communities read only the Song of Devorah, Judges 5:1–31. This Shabbat is called Shabbat Shirah, the “Shabbat of Song”: the parsha has the Song at the Sea (Exodus 15:1), and the haftarah has the song of Devorah and Barak (5:1). Hashem routs Sisera and his chariots (4:15) as He routed the host of Mitzrayim and its chariots (Exodus 14:24), and the river Kishon sweeps them away (5:21).

4:4And Devorah (Deborah), a prophetess, the wife of Lapidot (Lapidoth), she judged Yisrael at that time.

UDevorah ishah nevi'ah eshet Lapidot hi shofetah et-Yisra'el ba'et hahi.

4:5And she dwelt under the palm tree of Devorah between Ramah and Beit El (Beth-el) in mount Efrayim (Ephraim); and the children of Yisrael came up to her for judgment.

Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
