The Maftir repeats the last verses of the Seventh Portion. Acharei Mot is read on its own only in a leap year; in other years Acharei Mot and Kedoshim are read together on one Shabbat, the reading runs from Leviticus 16:1 to 20:27, and the Maftir and haftarah of Kedoshim are read. On Shabbat HaGadol and Machar Chodesh the Maftir is this one, and only the haftarah changes.

Haftarah · Amos 9:7–15

Haftarah

Acharei Mot opens with the Yom Kippur service, the day the sanctuary is cleansed “because of the uncleanness of the children of Yisrael” (16:16), and ends with the warning that the land will vomit out those who defile it (18:28). In the haftarah Hashem will sift the house of Yisrael among the nations “yet not the least pebble shall fall upon the earth” (9:9), and will raise up the fallen tabernacle of David and plant His people upon their land, never to be pulled up (9:11, 9:15). Ashkenazi communities, Chabad among them, read Amos 9:7–15 when Acharei Mot is read on its own, and also when Acharei Mot and Kedoshim are read together. Sephardic communities read Ezekiel 22:1–16. In a leap year Acharei Mot is often Shabbat HaGadol or Machar Chodesh, when the special haftarah is read instead.

Sephardic Haftarah · Ezekiel 22:1–16

Haftarah: Sephardic Custom

Read by Sephardic communities instead of Amos 9. Yechezkel indicts “the bloody city” for the very sins Acharei Mot forbids: uncovering a father’s nakedness, approaching a woman in her uncleanness, lying with a daughter-in-law or a sister (22:10–11; compare Leviticus 18:6–19). Ashkenazi communities read these verses, continuing to 22:19, as the haftarah of Kedoshim.

22:1Moreover the word of Hashem came unto me, saying,

Vayehi devar-Adonai elay lemor.

22:2“Now, you son of man, will you judge, will you judge the bloody city? Yes, you shall show her all her abominations.

HaGadol Haftarah · Malachi 3:4–24

Haftarah: Shabbat HaGadol

Shabbat HaGadol, “the Great Shabbat”, is the Shabbat before Pesach. In a leap year it is usually Shabbat Metzora, but about one leap year in four it falls on Acharei Mot (12 or 14 Nisan); in other years it is Shabbat Tzav. The Torah reading is unchanged, and this haftarah is read instead of Amos 9. It ends with the promise that gives the day one of its names: “Behold, I will send you Eliyahu the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of Hashem” (3:23). Most communities, Chabad among them, read it every Shabbat HaGadol; some read it only when Shabbat HaGadol falls on the eve of Pesach.

3:4Then shall the offering of Yehudah (Judah) and Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) be pleasant unto Hashem, as in the days of old, and as in former years.

3:5“And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and do not fear Me,” says Hashem of hosts.

Haftarah on Erev Rosh Chodesh · 1 Samuel 20:18–42

Haftarah: Machar Chodesh

Machar Chodesh (“Tomorrow is the new moon”) replaces the regular haftarah when Shabbat Acharei Mot falls on 29 Nisan, the day before Rosh Chodesh Iyar, as it does about one leap year in three. Acharei Mot never falls on Rosh Chodesh itself. Yonatan tells David, “Tomorrow is the new moon” (20:18), and the two friends part with an oath in the name of Hashem (20:42).

20:18Then Yehonatan (Jonathan) said to David, “Tomorrow is the new moon (Rosh Chodesh); and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty.

Vayomer-lo Yehonatan maḥar ḥodesh venifkadta ki yipaked moshaveḥa.

20:19And when you have stayed three days, then you shall go down quickly, and come to the place where you hid yourself when the matter was in hand, and shall remain by the stone Ezel.

Veshilashta tered me'od uvata el-hamakom asher-nistarta sham beyom hama'aseh veyashavta etzel ha'even ha'azel.

20:20And I will shoot three arrows on its side, as though I shot at a mark.

20:21And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I expressly say unto the lad, ‘Behold, the arrows are on this side of you, take them,’ then come; for there is peace to you, and no harm, as Hashem lives.

20:22But if I say thus unto the young man, ‘Behold, the arrows are beyond you,’ go your way; for Hashem has sent you away.

20:24So David hid himself in the field; and when the new moon had come, the king sat down to eat food.

Vayisater David basadeh vayehi haḥodesh vayeshev hameleḥ el-haleḥem le'eḥol.

20:25And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, upon the seat by the wall; and Yehonatan arose, and Avner (Abner) sat by Shaul’s (Saul’s) side, and David’s place was empty.

Vayeshev hameleḥ al-moshavo kefa'am befa'am el-moshav hakir vayakom Yehonatan vayeshev Avner mitzad Sha'ul vayipaked mekom David.

20:26Nevertheless Shaul did not speak anything that day; for he thought, “Something has happened to him; he is not clean; surely he is not clean.”

20:27And it came to pass on the next day, which was the second day of the month, that David’s place was empty; and Shaul said unto Yehonatan his son, “Why has the son of Yishai (Jesse) not come to the meal, neither yesterday nor today?”

Vayehi mimoḥorat haḥodesh hasheni vayipaked mekom David vayomer Sha'ul el-Yehonatan beno madua lo-va ven-Yishai gam-temol gam-hayom el-halaḥem.

20:28And Yehonatan answered Shaul, “David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Beit Lechem (Bethlehem).

Vaya'an Yehonatan et-Sha'ul nish'ol nish'al David me'imadi ad-Beit Laḥem.

20:29And he said, ‘Let me go, I pray you; for our family has a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there; and now, if I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away, I pray you, and see my brothers.’ Therefore he has not come unto the king’s table.”

Vayomer shaleḥeni na ki zevaḥ mishpaḥah lanu ba'ir vehu tzivah-li aḥi ve'atah im-matzati ḥen be'eineḥa imaletah na ve'er'eh et-eḥay al-ken lo-va el-shulḥan hameleḥ.

20:30Then Shaul’s anger was kindled against Yehonatan, and he said unto him, “You son of the perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Yishai to your own shame, and unto the shame of your mother’s nakedness?

20:31For as long as the son of Yishai lives upon the ground, you shall not be established, nor your kingdom. Therefore now send and bring him unto me, for he shall surely die.”

20:32And Yehonatan answered Shaul his father, and said unto him, “Why should he be put to death? What has he done?”

Vaya'an Yehonatan et-Sha'ul aviv vayomer elav lamah yumat meh asah.

20:33And Shaul cast a spear at him to strike him; by which Yehonatan knew that it was determined by his father to put David to death.

Vayatel Sha'ul et-haḥanit alav lehakoto vayeda Yehonatan ki-ḥalah hi me'im aviv lehamit et-David.

20:34So Yehonatan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month; for he was grieved for David, because his father had put him to shame.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
