Psalm 81

Asaf’s psalm for the solemn feast day, calling Israel to sing and blow the shofar, and giving God’s words: He brought them out of Mitzrayim, but they would not hearken to Him.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible, where the heading is verse 1. In most English Bibles the heading has no number, so each verse here is one higher than there (verse 2 here is verse 1 there).

81:1To the chief Musician upon Gittit, a Psalm of Asaf (Asaph).

81:2Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Ya’akov (Jacob).

81:3Take a psalm, and bring hither the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the psaltery.

81:4Blow up the shofar (trumpet) in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day.

81:5For this was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Ya’akov.

81:6This He ordained in Yosef (Joseph) for a testimony, when He went out through the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt): where I heard a language that I understood not.

81:7I removed his shoulder from the burden: his hands were delivered from the pots.

81:8You called in trouble, and I delivered you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder: I proved you at the waters of Meriva (Meribah). Selah.

81:9Hear, O My people, and I will testify unto you: O Israel, if you will hearken unto Me;

81:10There shall no strange god be in you; neither shall you worship any strange god.

81:11I am Hashem your God, which brought you out of the land of Mitzrayim: open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.

81:12But My people would not hearken to My voice; and Israel would none of Me.

81:13So I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lust: and they walked in their own counsels.

81:14Oh that My people had hearkened unto Me, and Israel had walked in My ways!

81:15I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned My hand against their adversaries.

81:16The haters of Hashem should have submitted themselves unto Him: but their time should have endured for ever.

81:17He should have fed them also with the finest of the wheat: and with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied you.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
