Text (469) 608-9944Psalm 80
Asaf’s prayer to the Shepherd of Israel to turn His people again and cause His face to shine, picturing Israel as a vine brought out of Mitzrayim, planted, and now broken down and burned.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible, where the heading is verse 1. In most English Bibles the heading has no number, so each verse here is one higher than there (verse 2 here is verse 1 there).
80:1To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim Edut, A Psalm of Asaf (Asaph).
80:2Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, You that lead Yosef (Joseph) like a flock; You that dwell between the cherubims, shine forth.
80:3Before Efrayim (Ephraim) and Binyamin (Benjamin) and Menashe (Manasseh) stir up Your strength, and come and save us.
80:4Turn us again, O God, and cause Your face to shine; and we shall be saved.
80:5O Hashem God of hosts, how long will You be angry against the prayer of Your people?
80:6You feed them with the bread of tears; and give them tears to drink in great measure.
80:7You make us a strife unto our neighbours: and our enemies laugh among themselves.
80:8Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause Your face to shine; and we shall be saved.
80:9You have brought a vine out of Mitzrayim (Egypt): You have cast out the heathen, and planted it.
80:10You prepared room before it, and did cause it to take deep root, and it filled the land.
80:11The hills were covered with the shadow of it, and the boughs thereof were like the goodly cedars.
80:12She sent out her boughs unto the sea, and her branches unto the river.
80:13Why have You then broken down her hedges, so that all they which pass by the way do pluck her?
80:14The boar out of the wood does waste it, and the wild beast of the field does devour it.
80:15Return, we beseech You, O God of hosts: look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine;
80:16And the vineyard which Your right hand has planted, and the branch that You made strong for Yourself.
80:17It is burned with fire, it is cut down: they perish at the rebuke of Your countenance.
80:18Let Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand, upon the son of man whom You made strong for Yourself.
80:19So will not we go back from You: quicken us, and we will call upon Your name.
80:20Turn us again, O Hashem God of hosts, cause Your face to shine; and we shall be saved.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
