Psalm 73

Asaf’s psalm of how he nearly slipped, envying the prosperity of the wicked, until he went into the sanctuary of God and understood their end, and found it good to draw near to God.

73:1A Psalm of Asaf (Asaph). Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.

73:2But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.

73:3For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

73:4For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.

73:5They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men.

73:6Therefore pride compasses them about as a chain; violence covers them as a garment.

73:7Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.

73:8They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily.

73:9They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walks through the earth.

73:10Therefore His people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.

73:11And they say, “How does God know? and is there knowledge in the Most High?”

73:12Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.

73:13Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency.

73:14For all the day long I have been plagued, and chastened every morning.

73:15If I say, “I will speak thus”; behold, I should offend against the generation of Your children.

73:16When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;

73:17Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.

73:18Surely You did set them in slippery places: You cast them down into destruction.

73:19How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.

73:20As a dream when one awakes; so, O Lord, when You awake, You shall despise their image.

73:21Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my inmost being.

73:22So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before You.

73:23Nevertheless I am continually with You: You have holden me by my right hand.

73:24You shall guide me with Your counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

73:25Whom have I in heaven but You? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside You.

73:26My flesh and my heart fails: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.

73:27For, lo, they that are far from You shall perish: You have destroyed all them that go a whoring from You.

73:28But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord Hashem, that I may declare all Your works.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
