Text (469) 608-9944Psalm 72
A psalm for Shlomo asking God to give the king His judgments, so that he judges the poor with righteousness, saves the needy, and has dominion from sea to sea, with all nations serving him.
72:1A Psalm for Shlomo (Solomon). Give the king Your judgments, O God, and Your righteousness unto the king’s son.
72:2He shall judge Your people with righteousness, and Your poor with judgment.
72:3The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness.
72:4He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.
72:5They shall fear You as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations.
72:6He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth.
72:7In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endures.
72:8He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.
72:9They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.
72:10The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheva (Sheba) and Seva (Seba) shall offer gifts.
72:11Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.
72:12For he shall deliver the needy when he cries; the poor also, and him that has no helper.
72:13He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.
72:14He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.
72:15And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheva: prayer also shall be made for him continually; and daily shall he be praised.
72:16There shall be an handful of grain in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Levanon (Lebanon): and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.
72:17His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.
72:18Blessed be Hashem God, the God of Israel, who only does wondrous things.
72:19And blessed be His glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with His glory; Amen, and Amen.
72:20The prayers of David the son of Yishai (Jesse) are ended.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
