Text (469) 608-9944Psalm 49
A psalm for the sons of Korach teaching all peoples that riches cannot ransom a man from death, for wise and foolish alike die, but God will redeem the psalmist’s soul from the grave.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible, where the heading is verse 1. In most English Bibles the heading has no number, so each verse here is one higher than there (verse 2 here is verse 1 there).
49:1To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korach (Korah).
49:2Hear this, all you people; give ear, all you inhabitants of the world:
49:3Both low and high, rich and poor, together.
49:4My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.
49:5I will incline my ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.
49:6Why should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?
49:7They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;
49:8None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:
49:9(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceases for ever:)
49:10That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.
49:11For he sees that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.
49:12Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.
49:13Nevertheless man being in honour abides not: he is like the beasts that perish.
49:14This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.
49:15Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.
49:16But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for He shall receive me. Selah.
49:17Be not you afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;
49:18For when he dies he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.
49:19Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise you, when you do well to yourself.
49:20He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.
49:21Man that is in honour, and understands not, is like the beasts that perish.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
