Psalm 48

A song and psalm for the sons of Korach praising Hashem in mount Tziyon, the city of the great King, where kings who assembled fled in fear, and calling all to walk about her.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible, where the heading is verse 1. In most English Bibles the heading has no number, so each verse here is one higher than there (verse 2 here is verse 1 there).

48:1A Song and Psalm for the sons of Korach (Korah).

48:2Great is Hashem, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of His holiness.

48:3Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Tziyon (Zion), on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.

48:4God is known in her palaces for a refuge.

48:5For, lo, the kings were assembled, they passed by together.

48:6They saw it, and so they marvelled; they were troubled, and hasted away.

48:7Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail.

48:8You break the ships of Tarshish with an east wind.

48:9As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of Hashem of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever. Selah.

48:10We have thought of Your lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of Your temple.

48:11According to Your name, O God, so is Your praise unto the ends of the earth: Your right hand is full of righteousness.

48:12Let mount Tziyon rejoice, let the daughters of Yehudah (Judah) be glad, because of Your judgments.

48:13Walk about Tziyon, and go round about her: tell the towers thereof.

48:14Mark you well her bulwarks, consider her palaces; that you may tell it to the generation following.

48:15For this God is our God for ever and ever: He will be our guide even unto death.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
