Psalm 139

A psalm of David on Hashem, who has searched and known him, whose presence he cannot flee, and who covered him in his mother’s womb, with a plea that God search his heart.

139:1To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. O Hashem, You have searched me, and known me.

139:2You know my downsitting and my uprising, You understand my thought afar off.

139:3You compass my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.

139:4For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Hashem, You know it altogether.

139:5You have beset me behind and before, and laid Your hand upon me.

139:6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

139:7Whither shall I go from Your spirit? or whither shall I flee from Your presence?

139:8If I ascend up into heaven, You are there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.

139:9If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

139:10Even there shall Your hand lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.

139:11If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me”; even the night shall be light about me.

139:12Yea, the darkness hides not from You; but the night shines as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to You.

139:13For You have possessed my inmost being: You have covered me in my mother’s womb.

139:14I will praise You; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are Your works; and that my soul knows right well.

139:15My substance was not hid from You, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

139:16Your eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in Your book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

139:17How precious also are Your thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!

139:18If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with You.

139:19Surely You will slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, you bloody men.

139:20For they speak against You wickedly, and Your enemies take Your name in vain.

139:21Do not I hate them, O Hashem, that hate You? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against You?

139:22I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them my enemies.

139:23Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

139:24And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
