Proverbs, Chapter 29

Proverbs of Shlomo on the stubborn and the wise, the righteous and the wicked in authority, the king who judges the poor faithfully, correcting a son, the angry and the proud, and the fear of man set against trust in Hashem.

29:1He, that being often reproved hardens his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

29:2When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked bears rule, the people mourn.

29:3Whoso loves wisdom rejoices his father: but he that keeps company with harlots spends his substance.

29:4The king by judgment establishes the land: but he that receives gifts overthrows it.

29:5A man that flatters his neighbour spreads a net for his feet.

29:6In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous does sing and rejoice.

29:7The righteous considers the cause of the poor: but the wicked regards not to know it.

29:8Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath.

29:9If a wise man contends with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest.

29:10The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul.

29:11A fool utters all his mind: but a wise man keeps it in till afterwards.

Rulers, servants and sons

29:12If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked.

29:13The poor and the deceitful man meet together: Hashem lightens both their eyes.

29:14The king that faithfully judges the poor, his throne shall be established for ever.

29:15The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself brings his mother to shame.

29:16When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increases: but the righteous shall see their fall.

29:17Correct your son, and he shall give you rest; yea, he shall give delight unto your soul.

29:18Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keeps the Torah, happy is he.

29:19A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer.

29:20See you a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

29:21He that delicately brings up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at the length.

Pride and the fear of man

29:22An angry man stirs up strife, and a furious man abounds in transgression.

29:23A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

29:24Whoso is partner with a thief hates his own soul: he hears cursing, and bewrays it not.

29:25The fear of man brings a snare: but whoso puts his trust in Hashem shall be safe.

29:26Many seek the ruler’s favour; but every man’s judgment comes from Hashem.

29:27An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Proverbs they are the same as in most English Bibles.
