Proverbs, Chapter 28

Sayings setting the wicked against the righteous: the righteous bold as a lion, those that keep the Torah, the poor that walks in his uprightness, confessing and forsaking sins, the wicked ruler, haste to be rich, robbing father or mother, and trust in Hashem.

28:1The wicked flee when no man pursues: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

28:2For the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof: but by a man of understanding and knowledge the state thereof shall be prolonged.

28:3A poor man that oppresses the poor is like a sweeping rain which leaves no food.

Those that keep the Torah

28:4They that forsake the Torah praise the wicked: but such as keep the Torah contend with them.

28:5Evil men understand not judgment: but they that seek Hashem understand all things.

28:6Better is the poor that walks in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich.

28:7Whoso keeps the Torah is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shames his father.

28:8He that by usury and unjust gain increases his substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor.

28:9He that turns away his ear from hearing the Torah, even his prayer shall be abomination.

28:10Whoso causes the righteous to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good things in possession.

28:11The rich man is wise in his own conceit; but the poor that has understanding searches him out.

When the wicked rise

28:12When righteous men do rejoice, there is great glory: but when the wicked rise, a man is hidden.

28:13He that covers his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesses and forsakes them shall have mercy.

28:14Happy is the man that fears alway: but he that hardens his heart shall fall into mischief.

28:15As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the poor people.

28:16The prince that wants understanding is also a great oppressor: but he that hates covetousness shall prolong his days.

28:17A man that does violence to the blood of any person shall flee to the pit; let no man stay him.

28:18Whoso walks uprightly shall be saved: but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall at once.

Haste to be rich

28:19He that tills his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that follows after vain persons shall have poverty enough.

28:20A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that makes haste to be rich shall not be innocent.

28:21To have respect of persons is not good: for for a piece of bread that man will transgress.

28:22He that hastes to be rich has an evil eye, and considers not that poverty shall come upon him.

28:23He that rebukes a man afterwards shall find more favour than he that flatters with the tongue.

28:24Whoso robs his father or his mother, and says, “It is no transgression”; the same is the companion of a destroyer.

28:25He that is of a proud heart stirs up strife: but he that puts his trust in Hashem shall be made fat.

28:26He that trusts in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walks wisely, he shall be delivered.

28:27He that gives unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hides his eyes shall have many a curse.

28:28When the wicked rise, men hide themselves: but when they perish, the righteous increase.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Proverbs they are the same as in most English Bibles.
