Text (469) 608-9944Numbers, Chapter 9
The children of Yisrael keep the Pesaḥ in the wilderness of Sinai; men defiled by a dead body ask why they are kept back, and Hashem appoints the Pesaḥ in the second month for them; the cloud and the fire over the tabernacle show when to journey and when to rest.
9:1And Hashem spoke unto Moshe (Moses) in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they had come out of the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt), saying,
9:2“Let the children of Yisrael (Israel) also keep the Pesaḥ (Passover) at its appointed season.
9:3On the fourteenth day of this month, at evening, you shall keep it in its appointed season; according to all its statutes, and according to all its ordinances, you shall keep it.”
9:4And Moshe spoke unto the children of Yisrael, that they should keep the Pesaḥ.
9:5And they kept the Pesaḥ on the fourteenth day of the first month at evening in the wilderness of Sinai; according to all that Hashem commanded Moshe, so did the children of Yisrael.
9:6And there were certain men who were defiled by the dead body of a man, so that they could not keep the Pesaḥ on that day; and they came before Moshe and before Aharon (Aaron) on that day.
9:7And those men said unto him, “We are defiled by the dead body of a man; why are we kept back, that we may not offer the offering of Hashem in its appointed season among the children of Yisrael?”
9:8And Moshe said unto them, “Stand still, and I will hear what Hashem will command concerning you.”
9:9And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,
9:10“Speak unto the children of Yisrael, saying, ‘If any man of you or of your generations shall be unclean by reason of a dead body, or be on a journey afar off, yet he shall keep the Pesaḥ unto Hashem.
9:11On the fourteenth day of the second month at evening they shall keep it, and eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.
9:12They shall leave none of it until the morning, nor break any bone of it; according to all the statute of the Pesaḥ they shall keep it.
9:13But the man that is clean, and is not on a journey, and refrains from keeping the Pesaḥ, that same soul shall be cut off from his people; because he did not bring the offering of Hashem in its appointed season, that man shall bear his sin.
9:14And if a stranger sojourns among you, and will keep the Pesaḥ unto Hashem, according to the statute of the Pesaḥ, and according to its ordinance, so shall he do; you shall have one statute, both for the stranger, and for him that was born in the land.’”
9:15And on the day that the tabernacle was set up, the cloud covered the tabernacle, the tent of the testimony; and at evening there was upon the tabernacle as it were the appearance of fire, until the morning.
9:16So it was always: the cloud covered it by day, and the appearance of fire by night.
9:17And when the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle, then after that the children of Yisrael journeyed; and in the place where the cloud abode, there the children of Yisrael pitched their tents.
9:18At the commandment of Hashem the children of Yisrael journeyed, and at the commandment of Hashem they pitched; as long as the cloud abode upon the tabernacle they rested in their tents.
9:19And when the cloud tarried long upon the tabernacle many days, then the children of Yisrael kept the charge of Hashem, and did not journey.
9:20And so it was, when the cloud was a few days upon the tabernacle: according to the commandment of Hashem they abode in their tents, and according to the commandment of Hashem they journeyed.
9:21And so it was, when the cloud abode from evening until the morning, and the cloud was taken up in the morning, then they journeyed; whether it was by day or by night that the cloud was taken up, they journeyed.
9:22Or whether it was two days, or a month, or a year, that the cloud tarried upon the tabernacle, remaining on it, the children of Yisrael abode in their tents, and did not journey; but when it was taken up, they journeyed.
9:23At the commandment of Hashem they rested in the tents, and at the commandment of Hashem they journeyed; they kept the charge of Hashem, at the commandment of Hashem by the hand of Moshe.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Numbers they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 16, 17, 25, 26, 29 and 30; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
