Numbers, Chapter 8

Aharon lights the seven lamps of the candlestick of beaten gold; the Levi’im are cleansed, offered before Hashem in place of the firstborn and given to Aharon and his sons, and they serve in the tabernacle from twenty-five to fifty years old.

Lighting the lamps

8:1And Hashem spoke unto Moshe (Moses), saying,

8:2“Speak unto Aharon (Aaron), and say unto him, ‘When you light the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the candlestick.’”

8:3And Aharon did so; he lit its lamps in front of the candlestick, as Hashem commanded Moshe.

8:4And this work of the candlestick was of beaten gold; unto its shaft, unto its flowers, it was beaten work; according unto the pattern which Hashem had shown Moshe, so he made the candlestick.

The cleansing of the Levi’im

8:5And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

8:6“Take the Levi’im (Levites) from among the children of Yisrael (Israel), and cleanse them.

8:7And thus shall you do unto them, to cleanse them: sprinkle water of purifying upon them, and let them shave all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and so make themselves clean.

8:8Then let them take a young bullock with its meal offering, fine flour mixed with oil, and another young bullock you shall take for a sin offering.

8:9And you shall bring the Levi’im before the tabernacle of the congregation, and you shall gather the whole assembly of the children of Yisrael together.

8:10And you shall bring the Levi’im before Hashem, and the children of Yisrael shall put their hands upon the Levi’im.

8:11And Aharon shall offer the Levi’im before Hashem for an offering of the children of Yisrael, that they may perform the service of Hashem.

8:12And the Levi’im shall lay their hands upon the heads of the bullocks; and you shall offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, unto Hashem, to make atonement for the Levi’im.

8:13And you shall set the Levi’im before Aharon and before his sons, and offer them for an offering unto Hashem.

8:14Thus shall you separate the Levi’im from among the children of Yisrael, and the Levi’im shall be Mine.

8:15And after that the Levi’im shall go in to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; and you shall cleanse them, and offer them for an offering.

8:16For they are wholly given unto Me from among the children of Yisrael; instead of all that open the womb, instead of the firstborn of all the children of Yisrael, I have taken them unto Me.

8:17For all the firstborn of the children of Yisrael are Mine, both man and beast; on the day that I struck every firstborn in the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt) I sanctified them for Myself.

8:18And I have taken the Levi’im instead of all the firstborn of the children of Yisrael.

8:19And I have given the Levi’im as a gift to Aharon and to his sons from among the children of Yisrael, to do the service of the children of Yisrael in the tabernacle of the congregation, and to make atonement for the children of Yisrael, that there be no plague among the children of Yisrael when the children of Yisrael come near unto the sanctuary.”

The Levi’im begin their service

8:20And Moshe, and Aharon, and all the congregation of the children of Yisrael did to the Levi’im according to all that Hashem commanded Moshe concerning the Levi’im; so did the children of Yisrael unto them.

8:21And the Levi’im were purified, and they washed their clothes; and Aharon offered them as an offering before Hashem, and Aharon made atonement for them to cleanse them.

8:22And after that the Levi’im went in to do their service in the tabernacle of the congregation before Aharon and before his sons; as Hashem had commanded Moshe concerning the Levi’im, so they did unto them.

The years of service

8:23And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

8:24“This is what belongs unto the Levi’im: from twenty-five years old and upward they shall go in to wait upon the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.

8:25And from the age of fifty years they shall cease waiting upon its service, and shall serve no more;

8:26but shall minister with their brethren in the tabernacle of the congregation, to keep the charge, and shall do no work. Thus shall you do unto the Levi’im concerning their charge.”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Numbers they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 16, 17, 25, 26, 29 and 30; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
