Numbers, Chapter 32

The children of Reuven and Gad ask for the cattle land of Ya’zer and Gil’ad east of the Yarden; Moshe rebukes them, recalling the spies, but agrees when they pledge to go armed before Yisrael, and gives the land to them and half the tribe of Menasheh.

The request of Reuven and gad

32:1Now the children of Reuven (Reuben) and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle; and when they saw the land of Ya’zer (Jazer), and the land of Gil’ad (Gilead), that, behold, the place was a place for cattle,

32:2the children of Gad and the children of Reuven came and spoke unto Moshe (Moses), and to Elazar (Eleazar) the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying,

32:3“Atarot (Ataroth), and Divon (Dibon), and Ya’zer, and Nimrah, and Ḥeshbon (Heshbon), and El’aleh (Elealeh), and Sevam (Shebam), and Nevo (Nebo), and Be’on (Beon),

32:4the country which Hashem struck before the congregation of Yisrael (Israel), is a land for cattle, and your servants have cattle.”

32:5“Therefore,” they said, “if we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given unto your servants for a possession, and do not bring us over the Yarden (Jordan).”

Moshe’s rebuke

32:6And Moshe said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuven, “Shall your brothers go to war, and shall you sit here?

32:7And why do you discourage the heart of the children of Yisrael from going over into the land which Hashem has given them?

Written and read. Written תנואון, read תְנִיא֔וּן. The Hebrew shows the written form (ketiv); the English follows the reading (qere).

32:8Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea (Kadesh-barnea) to see the land.

32:9For when they went up unto the valley of Eshkol (Eshcol), and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Yisrael, so that they should not go into the land which Hashem had given them.

32:10And Hashem’s anger was kindled at that time, and He swore, saying,

32:11‘Surely none of the men that came up out of Mitzrayim (Egypt), from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore unto Avraham (Abraham), unto Yitzḥak (Isaac), and unto Yaakov (Jacob), because they have not wholly followed Me;

32:12except Kalev (Caleb) the son of Yefunneh (Jephunneh) the Kenizzi (Kenezite), and Yehoshua (Joshua) the son of Nun, for they have wholly followed Hashem.’

32:13And Hashem’s anger was kindled against Yisrael, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of Hashem was consumed.

32:14And, behold, you have risen up in your fathers’ place, an increase of sinful men, to add yet more to the fierce anger of Hashem toward Yisrael.

32:15For if you turn away from following Him, He will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and you shall destroy all this people.”

The pledge to go armed

32:16And they came near unto him, and said, “We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones;

32:17but we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Yisrael, until we have brought them unto their place; and our little ones shall dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

32:18We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Yisrael have inherited every man his inheritance.

32:19For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Yarden, or beyond, because our inheritance has fallen to us on this side of the Yarden eastward.”

32:20And Moshe said unto them, “If you will do this thing, if you will go armed before Hashem to war,

32:21and will go, all of you armed, over the Yarden before Hashem, until He has driven out His enemies from before Him,

32:22and the land is subdued before Hashem, then afterward you shall return, and be guiltless before Hashem, and before Yisrael; and this land shall be your possession before Hashem.

32:23But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against Hashem; and be sure your sin will find you out.

32:24Build cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which has proceeded out of your mouth.”

32:25And the children of Gad and the children of Reuven spoke unto Moshe, saying, “Your servants will do as my lord commands.

32:26Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gil’ad;

32:27but your servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before Hashem to battle, as my lord says.”

32:28So concerning them Moshe commanded Elazar the priest, and Yehoshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the children of Yisrael.

32:29And Moshe said unto them, “If the children of Gad and the children of Reuven will pass with you over the Yarden, every man armed for battle, before Hashem, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gil’ad for a possession;

32:30but if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Kena’an (Canaan).”

32:31And the children of Gad and the children of Reuven answered, saying, “As Hashem has said unto your servants, so will we do.

32:32We will pass over armed before Hashem into the land of Kena’an, that the possession of our inheritance on this side of the Yarden may be ours.”

The land east of the Yarden

32:33And Moshe gave unto them, to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuven, and unto half the tribe of Menasheh (Manasseh) the son of Yosef (Joseph), the kingdom of Siḥon (Sihon) king of the Emori (Amorites), and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with its cities within its borders, the cities of the land round about.

32:34And the children of Gad built Divon, and Atarot, and Aro’er (Aroer),

32:35and Atrot Shofan (Atroth, Shophan), and Ya’zer, and Yogbehah (Jogbehah),

32:36and Beit Nimrah (Beth-nimrah), and Beit Haran (Beth-haran), fortified cities, and folds for sheep.

32:37And the children of Reuven built Ḥeshbon, and El’aleh, and Kiryatayim (Kirjathaim),

32:38and Nevo, and Ba’al Me’on (Baal-meon), their names being changed, and Sivmah (Shibmah); and gave other names unto the cities which they built.

Menasheh takes Gil’ad

32:39And the children of Machir the son of Menasheh went to Gil’ad, and took it, and dispossessed the Emori who were in it.

32:40And Moshe gave Gil’ad unto Machir the son of Menasheh; and he dwelt in it.

32:41And Ya’ir (Jair) the son of Menasheh went and took its small towns, and called them Ḥavvot Ya’ir.

32:42And Novaḥ (Nobah) went and took Kenat (Kenath), and its villages, and called it Novaḥ, after his own name.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Numbers they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 16, 17, 25, 26, 29 and 30; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
