Numbers, Chapter 27

The daughters of Tzelofḥad ask for a possession among their father’s brethren, and Hashem gives the law of inheritance; Moshe is told to see the land from mount Avarim before he dies, and Yehoshua the son of Nun is set before Elazar and the congregation to lead after him.

The daughters of Tzelofḥad

27:1Then came the daughters of Tzelofḥad (Zelophehad), the son of Ḥefer (Hepher), the son of Gil’ad (Gilead), the son of Machir, the son of Menasheh (Manasseh), of the families of Menasheh the son of Yosef (Joseph); and these are the names of his daughters: Maḥlah (Mahlah), No’ah (Noah), and Ḥoglah (Hoglah), and Milkah (Milcah), and Tirtzah (Tirzah).

27:2And they stood before Moshe (Moses), and before Elazar (Eleazar) the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,

27:3“Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of those that gathered themselves together against Hashem in the company of Koraḥ (Korah); but died in his own sin, and had no sons.

27:4Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he has no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.”

27:5And Moshe brought their cause before Hashem.

27:6And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

27:7“The daughters of Tzelofḥad speak right; you shall surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brethren; and you shall cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.

The law of inheritance

27:8And you shall speak unto the children of Yisrael (Israel), saying, ‘If a man dies, and has no son, then you shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.

27:9And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance unto his brethren.

27:10And if he has no brethren, then you shall give his inheritance unto his father’s brethren.

27:11And if his father has no brethren, then you shall give his inheritance unto his kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it. And it shall be unto the children of Yisrael a statute of judgment,’” as Hashem commanded Moshe.

Moshe sees the land

27:12And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Go up into this mount Avarim (Abarim), and see the land which I have given unto the children of Yisrael.

27:13And when you have seen it, you also shall be gathered unto your people, as Aharon (Aaron) your brother was gathered;

27:14because you rebelled against My commandment in the wilderness of Tzin (Zin), in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify Me at the water before their eyes.” That is the water of Merivah (Meribah) in Kadesh in the wilderness of Tzin.

Yehoshua appointed

27:15And Moshe spoke unto Hashem, saying,

27:16“Let Hashem, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation,

27:17who may go out before them, and who may go in before them, and who may lead them out, and who may bring them in; that the congregation of Hashem be not as sheep which have no shepherd.”

27:18And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Take Yehoshua (Joshua) the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand upon him;

27:19and set him before Elazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight.

27:20And you shall put some of your honor upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Yisrael may be obedient.

27:21And he shall stand before Elazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of the Urim before Hashem; at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Yisrael with him, even all the congregation.”

27:22And Moshe did as Hashem commanded him; and he took Yehoshua, and set him before Elazar the priest, and before all the congregation;

27:23and he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as Hashem commanded by the hand of Moshe.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Numbers they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 16, 17, 25, 26, 29 and 30; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
