Text (469) 608-9944Micah, Chapter 6
Hashem pleads His controversy with His people, recalling how He brought them out of Mitzrayim and sent Moshe, Aharon and Miryam, and what Balak and Bil’am did; He requires not thousands of rams but to do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God, and He will punish the wicked balances and the statutes of Omri and Achav.
6:1Hear you now what Hashem says: “Arise, contend you before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice.”
6:2Hear you, O mountains, Hashem’s controversy, and you strong foundations of the earth: for Hashem has a controversy with His people, and He will plead with Israel.
6:3O My people, what have I done unto you? and wherein have I wearied you? testify against Me.
6:4For I brought you up out of the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt), and redeemed you out of the house of servants; and I sent before you Moshe (Moses), Aharon (Aaron), and Miryam (Miriam).
6:5O My people, remember now what Balak king of Mo’av (Moab) consulted, and what Bil’am (Balaam) the son of Be’or (Beor) answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that you may know the righteousness of Hashem.
6:6Wherewith shall I come before Hashem, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old?
6:7Will Hashem be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
6:8He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does Hashem require of you, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?
6:9Hashem’s voice cries unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see your name: hear you the rod, and who has appointed it.
6:10Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is abominable?
6:11Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights?
6:12For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.
6:13Therefore also will I make you sick in striking you, in making you desolate because of your sins.
6:14You shall eat, but not be satisfied; and your casting down shall be in the midst of you; and you shall take hold, but shall not deliver; and that which you deliver will I give up to the sword.
6:15You shall sow, but you shall not reap; you shall tread the olives, but you shall not anoint you with oil; and sweet wine, but shall not drink wine.
6:16For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Achav (Ahab), and you walk in their counsels; that I should make you a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an hissing: therefore you shall bear the reproach of My people.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Micah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 4 and 5; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
