Micah, Chapter 5

Out of Beit Lechem Efratah comes forth the ruler in Israel whose goings forth are from everlasting; he shall feed in the strength of Hashem and be the peace when Ashur comes, the remnant of Ya’akov shall be as dew and as a lion among the nations, and Hashem cuts off horses, strong holds, witchcrafts and graven images.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verses 1–14 here are 5:2–15 in most English Bibles. Verse 5:1 of most English Bibles is 4:14 here.

5:1But you, Beit Lechem Efratah (Bethlehem Ephratah), though you be little among the thousands of Yehudah (Judah), yet out of you shall he come forth unto Me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

5:2Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travails has brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel.

5:3And he shall stand and feed in the strength of Hashem, in the majesty of the name of Hashem his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.

5:4And this man shall be the peace, when Ashur (the Assyrian) shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men.

5:5And they shall waste the land of Ashur with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from Ashur, when he comes into our land, and when he treads within our borders.

The remnant of Ya’akov

5:6And the remnant of Ya’akov (Jacob) shall be in the midst of many people as a dew from Hashem, as the showers upon the grass, that tarries not for man, nor waits for the sons of men.

5:7And the remnant of Ya’akov shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people as a lion among the beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep: who, if he go through, both treads down, and tears in pieces, and none can deliver.

5:8Your hand shall be lifted up upon your adversaries, and all your enemies shall be cut off.

Horses, witchcrafts and images cut off

5:9And it shall come to pass in that day, says Hashem, that I will cut off your horses out of the midst of you, and I will destroy your chariots:

5:10And I will cut off the cities of your land, and throw down all your strong holds:

5:11And I will cut off witchcrafts out of your hand; and you shall have no more soothsayers:

5:12Your graven images also will I cut off, and your standing images out of the midst of you; and you shall no more worship the work of your hands.

5:13And I will pluck up your groves out of the midst of you: so will I destroy your cities.

5:14And I will execute vengeance in anger and fury upon the heathen, such as they have not heard.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Micah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 4 and 5; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
