Malachi, Chapter 2

The priests are warned of a curse for not giving glory to Hashem’s name, and reminded of His covenant of life and peace with Levi, who had the Torah of truth in his mouth; Yehudah is rebuked for marrying the daughter of a strange god and dealing treacherously with the wife of his youth, and for wearying Hashem with words.

2:1And now, O you priests, this commandment is for you.

2:2If you will not hear, and if you will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto My name, says Hashem of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because you do not lay it to heart.

2:3Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn feasts; and one shall take you away with it.

The covenant of Levi

2:4And you shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that My covenant might be with Levi, says Hashem of hosts.

2:5My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he feared Me, and was afraid before My name.

2:6The Torah of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with Me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity.

2:7For the priest’s lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the Torah at his mouth: for he is the messenger of Hashem of hosts.

2:8But you are departed out of the way; you have caused many to stumble at the Torah; you have corrupted the covenant of Levi, says Hashem of hosts.

2:9Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as you have not kept My ways, but have been partial in the Torah.

The wife of your youth

2:10Have we not all one father? has not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?

2:11Yehudah (Judah) has dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem); for Yehudah has profaned the holiness of Hashem which he loved, and has married the daughter of a strange god.

2:12Hashem will cut off the man that does this, the master and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Ya’akov (Jacob), and him that offers an offering unto Hashem of hosts.

2:13And this have you done again, covering the altar of Hashem with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that He regards not the offering any more, or receives it with good will at your hand.

2:14Yet you say, “Wherefore?” Because Hashem has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously: yet is she your companion, and the wife of your covenant.

2:15And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.

2:16For Hashem, the God of Israel, says that He hates putting away: for one covers violence with his garment, says Hashem of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that you deal not treacherously.

Where is the God of judgment

2:17You have wearied Hashem with your words. Yet you say, “Wherein have we wearied Him?” When you say, “Every one that does evil is good in the sight of Hashem, and He delights in them;” or, “Where is the God of judgment?”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Malachi they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapter 3; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
