Leviticus, Chapter 24

Pure olive oil for the lamps that burn continually and twelve cakes set each sabbath on the pure table; the son of a Yisraeli woman and a Mitzri father blasphemes the Name, and Hashem gives laws for blasphemy and injury before he is stoned outside the camp.

Oil for the lamps

24:1And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

24:2“Command the children of Yisrael (Israel), that they bring unto you pure beaten olive oil for the light, to cause the lamp to burn continually.

24:3Outside the veil of the testimony, in the tabernacle of the congregation, shall Aharon (Aaron) set it in order from the evening unto the morning before Hashem continually; it shall be a statute for ever in your generations.

24:4He shall set in order the lamps upon the pure lampstand before Hashem continually.

The twelve cakes

24:5And you shall take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes of it; two tenth parts shall be in one cake.

24:6And you shall set them in two rows, six in a row, upon the pure table before Hashem.

24:7And you shall put pure frankincense upon each row, that it may be on the bread for a memorial, even an offering made by fire unto Hashem.

24:8Every sabbath he shall set it in order before Hashem continually, being taken from the children of Yisrael by an everlasting covenant.

24:9And it shall be Aharon’s and his sons’; and they shall eat it in the holy place; for it is most holy unto him of the offerings of Hashem made by fire by a perpetual statute.”

The blasphemer

24:10And the son of a Yisraeli (Israelite) woman, whose father was a Mitzri (Egyptian), went out among the children of Yisrael; and this son of the Yisraeli woman and a man of Yisrael fought together in the camp;

24:11and the Yisraeli woman’s son blasphemed the Name, and cursed. And they brought him unto Moshe (and his mother’s name was Shelomit, the daughter of Divri, of the tribe of Dan);

24:12and they put him in custody, that the mind of Hashem might be shown them.

24:13And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

24:14“Bring forth him that has cursed outside the camp; and let all that heard him lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him.

24:15And you shall speak unto the children of Yisrael, saying, ‘Whoever curses his God shall bear his sin.

24:16And he that blasphemes the name of Hashem, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him; the stranger, as well as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.

Eye for eye

24:17And he that kills any man shall surely be put to death.

24:18And he that kills a beast shall make it good; beast for beast.

24:19And if a man causes a blemish in his neighbor, as he has done, so shall it be done to him:

24:20breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; as he has caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again.

24:21And he that kills a beast, he shall restore it; and he that kills a man, he shall be put to death.

24:22You shall have one manner of law, for the stranger as well as for one of your own country; for I am Hashem your God.’”

The blasphemer stoned

24:23And Moshe spoke to the children of Yisrael, that they should bring forth him that had cursed outside the camp, and stone him with stones. And the children of Yisrael did as Hashem commanded Moshe.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Leviticus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5 and 6; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
