Leviticus, Chapter 1

Hashem calls to Moshe from the tabernacle of the congregation and gives the law of the burnt offering, brought from the herd, from the flock of sheep or goats, or from turtledoves and young pigeons, each burnt wholly on the altar as a sweet savor unto Hashem.

The burnt offering of the herd

1:1And Hashem called unto Moshe (Moses), and spoke unto him out of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,

1:2“Speak unto the children of Yisrael (Israel), and say unto them, ‘If any man of you brings an offering unto Hashem, you shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock.

1:3If his offering is a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish; he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before Hashem.

1:4And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.

1:5And he shall kill the bullock before Hashem; and the priests, Aharon’s (Aaron’s) sons, shall bring the blood, and sprinkle the blood round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

1:6And he shall flay the burnt offering, and cut it into its pieces.

1:7And the sons of Aharon (Aaron) the priest shall put fire upon the altar, and lay the wood in order upon the fire.

1:8And the priests, Aharon’s sons, shall lay the parts, the head, and the fat, in order upon the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar.

1:9But its inwards and its legs he shall wash in water; and the priest shall burn all on the altar, to be a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto Hashem.

The burnt offering of the flock

1:10And if his offering is of the flocks, namely, of the sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt sacrifice, he shall bring it a male without blemish.

1:11And he shall kill it on the side of the altar northward before Hashem; and the priests, Aharon’s sons, shall sprinkle its blood round about upon the altar.

1:12And he shall cut it into its pieces, with its head and its fat; and the priest shall lay them in order on the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar.

1:13But he shall wash the inwards and the legs with water; and the priest shall bring it all, and burn it upon the altar. It is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto Hashem.

The burnt offering of fowls

1:14And if the burnt sacrifice for his offering to Hashem is of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtledoves, or of young pigeons.

1:15And the priest shall bring it unto the altar, and wring off its head, and burn it on the altar; and its blood shall be wrung out at the side of the altar.

1:16And he shall pluck away its crop with its feathers, and cast it beside the altar on the east part, by the place of the ashes.

1:17And he shall cleave it with its wings, but shall not divide it asunder; and the priest shall burn it upon the altar, upon the wood that is upon the fire. It is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto Hashem.”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Leviticus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5 and 6; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
