Joshua, Chapter 18

The congregation sets up the tabernacle of the congregation at Shiloh; Yehoshua sends men to describe the land in seven parts and casts lots before Hashem, and the lot of Binyamin, its borders and its cities, falls between Yehudah and Yosef.

The tabernacle at Shiloh

18:1And the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together at Shiloh, and set up the tabernacle of the congregation there. And the land was subdued before them.

18:2And there remained among the children of Israel seven tribes, which had not yet received their inheritance.

The land is described in seven parts

18:3And Yehoshua (Joshua) said unto the children of Israel, “How long are you slack to go to possess the land, which Hashem God of your fathers has given you?

18:4Give out from among you three men for each tribe: and I will send them, and they shall rise, and go through the land, and describe it according to the inheritance of them; and they shall come again to me.

18:5And they shall divide it into seven parts: Yehudah (Judah) shall abide in their coast on the south, and the house of Yosef (Joseph) shall abide in their coasts on the north.

18:6You shall therefore describe the land into seven parts, and bring the description hither to me, that I may cast lots for you here before Hashem our God.

18:7But the Levi’im (Levites) have no part among you; for the priesthood of Hashem is their inheritance: and Gad, and Re’uven (Reuben), and half the tribe of Menashe (Manasseh), have received their inheritance beyond Yarden (Jordan) on the east, which Moshe (Moses) the servant of Hashem gave them.”

18:8And the men arose, and went away: and Yehoshua charged them that went to describe the land, saying, “Go and walk through the land, and describe it, and come again to me, that I may here cast lots for you before Hashem in Shiloh.”

18:9And the men went and passed through the land, and described it by cities into seven parts in a book, and came again to Yehoshua to the host at Shiloh.

18:10And Yehoshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before Hashem: and there Yehoshua divided the land unto the children of Israel according to their divisions.

The border of Binyamin

18:11And the lot of the tribe of the children of Binyamin (Benjamin) came up according to their families: and the coast of their lot came forth between the children of Yehudah and the children of Yosef.

18:12And their border on the north side was from Yarden; and the border went up to the side of Yericho (Jericho) on the north side, and went up through the mountains westward; and the goings out thereof were at the wilderness of Beit Aven (Beth-aven).

18:13And the border went over from thence toward Luz, to the side of Luz, which is Beit El (Bethel), southward; and the border descended to Atrot Adar (Ataroth-adar), near the hill that lies on the south side of the nether Beit Choron (Beth-horon).

18:14And the border was drawn thence, and compassed the corner of the sea southward, from the hill that lies before Beit Choron southward; and the goings out thereof were at Kiryat Ba’al (Kirjath-baal), which is Kiryat Ye’arim (Kirjath-jearim), a city of the children of Yehudah: this was the west quarter.

18:15And the south quarter was from the end of Kiryat Ye’arim, and the border went out on the west, and went out to the well of waters of Neftoach (Nephtoah):

18:16And the border came down to the end of the mountain that lies before the valley of the son of Hinnom, and which is in the valley of the giants on the north, and descended to the valley of Hinnom, to the side of Yevusi (Jebusi) on the south, and descended to Ein Rogel (En-rogel),

18:17And was drawn from the north, and went forth to Ein Shemesh (En-shemesh), and went forth toward Gelilot (Geliloth), which is over against the going up of Adumim (Adummim), and descended to the stone of Bohan the son of Re’uven,

18:18And passed along toward the side over against Aravah (Arabah) northward, and went down unto Aravah:

18:19And the border passed along to the side of Beit Choglah (Beth-hoglah) northward: and the outgoings of the border were at the north bay of the salt sea at the south end of Yarden: this was the south coast.

18:20And Yarden was the border of it on the east side. This was the inheritance of the children of Binyamin, by the coasts thereof round about, according to their families.

The cities of Binyamin

18:21Now the cities of the tribe of the children of Binyamin according to their families were Yericho, and Beit Choglah, and the valley of Ketzitz (Keziz),

18:22And Beit HaAravah (Beth-arabah), and Tzemarayim (Zemaraim), and Beit El,

18:23And Avvim (Avim), and Parah, and Ofrah (Ophrah),

18:25Givon (Gibeon), and Ramah, and Be’erot (Beeroth),

18:26And Mitzpeh (Mizpeh), and Kefirah (Chephirah), and Motzah (Mozah),

18:28And Tzela (Zelah), Elef (Eleph), and Yevusi, which is Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), Giv’at (Gibeath), and Kiryat (Kirjath); fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the children of Binyamin according to their families.

Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
