Text (469) 608-9944Joshua, Chapter 11
Yavin king of Chatzor gathers the kings of the north against Israel at the waters of Merom; Hashem gives them into Yehoshua’s hand, Chatzor is burned, the whole land is taken, the Anakim are cut off, and the land rests from war.
11:1And it came to pass, when Yavin (Jabin) king of Chatzor (Hazor) had heard those things, that he sent to Yovav (Jobab) king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaf (Achshaph),
11:2And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Kinarot (Chinneroth), and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west,
11:3And to the Kena’ani (Canaanite) on the east and on the west, and to the Emori (Amorite), and the Chitti (Hittite), and the Perizzi (Perizzite), and the Yevusi (Jebusite) in the mountains, and to the Chivi (Hivite) under Chermon (Hermon) in the land of Mitzpah (Mizpeh).
11:4And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.
11:5And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.
11:6And Hashem said unto Yehoshua (Joshua), “Be not afraid because of them: for tomorrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: you shall hamstring their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.”
11:7So Yehoshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them.
11:8And Hashem delivered them into the hand of Israel, who struck them, and chased them unto great Tzidon (Zidon), and unto Misrefot Mayim (Misrephoth-maim), and unto the valley of Mitzpeh (Mizpeh) eastward; and they struck them, until they left them none remaining.
11:9And Yehoshua did unto them as Hashem bade him: he hamstrung their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.
11:10And Yehoshua at that time turned back, and took Chatzor, and struck the king thereof with the sword: for Chatzor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.
11:11And they struck all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe: and he burnt Chatzor with fire.
11:12And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Yehoshua take, and struck them with the edge of the sword, and he utterly destroyed them, as Moshe (Moses) the servant of Hashem commanded.
11:13But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Israel burned none of them, save Chatzor only; that did Yehoshua burn.
11:14And all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they struck with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to breathe.
11:15As Hashem commanded Moshe His servant, so did Moshe command Yehoshua, and so did Yehoshua; he left nothing undone of all that Hashem commanded Moshe.
11:16So Yehoshua took all that land, the hills, and all the south country, and all the land of Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same;
11:17Even from the mount Chalak (Halak), that goes up to Se’ir (Seir), even unto Ba’al Gad (Baal-gad) in the valley of Levanon (Lebanon) under mount Chermon: and all their kings he took, and struck them, and slew them.
11:18Yehoshua made war a long time with all those kings.
11:19There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Chivi the inhabitants of Givon (Gibeon): all other they took in battle.
11:20For it was of Hashem to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that He might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that He might destroy them, as Hashem commanded Moshe.
11:21And at that time came Yehoshua, and cut off the Anakim (Anakims) from the mountains, from Chevron (Hebron), from Devir (Debir), from Anav (Anab), and from all the mountains of Yehudah (Judah), and from all the mountains of Israel: Yehoshua destroyed them utterly with their cities.
11:22There was none of the Anakim left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Azzah (Gaza), in Gat (Gath), and in Ashdod, there remained.
11:23So Yehoshua took the whole land, according to all that Hashem said unto Moshe; and Yehoshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Joshua they are the same as in most English Bibles.
