Isaiah, Chapter 33

Woe to the spoiler who deals treacherously; the people pray to Hashem in the time of trouble, Hashem rises against the nations, the sinners in Tziyon are afraid, the one who walks righteously shall dwell on high, and Tziyon is seen as a quiet habitation where Hashem is judge, lawgiver and king.

33:1Woe to you that spoil, and you were not spoiled; and deal treacherously, and they dealt not treacherously with you! when you shall cease to spoil, you shall be spoiled; and when you shall make an end to deal treacherously, they shall deal treacherously with you.

33:2O Hashem, be gracious unto us; we have waited for You: be You their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble.

33:3At the noise of the tumult the people fled; at the lifting up of Yourself the nations were scattered.

33:4And your spoil shall be gathered like the gathering of the caterpillar: as the running to and fro of locusts shall he run upon them.

33:5Hashem is exalted; for He dwells on high: He has filled Tziyon (Zion) with judgment and righteousness.

33:6And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of your times, and strength of salvation: the fear of Hashem is his treasure.

33:7Behold, their valiant ones shall cry without: the ambassadors of peace shall weep bitterly.

33:8The highways lie waste, the wayfaring man ceases: he has broken the covenant, he has despised the cities, he regards no man.

33:9The earth mourns and languishes: Levanon (Lebanon) is ashamed and hewn down: Sharon is like a wilderness; and Bashan and Karmel (Carmel) shake off their fruits.

Now will I rise

33:10“Now will I rise,” says Hashem; “now will I be exalted; now will I lift up Myself.

33:11You shall conceive chaff, you shall bring forth stubble: your breath, as fire, shall devour you.

33:12And the people shall be as the burnings of lime: as thorns cut up shall they be burned in the fire.

33:13Hear, you that are far off, what I have done; and, you that are near, acknowledge My might.”

Who shall dwell with the devouring fire

33:14The sinners in Tziyon are afraid; fearfulness has surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?

33:15He that walks righteously, and speaks uprightly; he that despises the gain of oppressions, that shakes his hands from holding of bribes, that stops his ears from hearing of blood, and shuts his eyes from seeing evil;

33:16He shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.

33:17Your eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off.

33:18Your heart shall meditate terror. Where is the scribe? where is the receiver? where is he that counted the towers?

33:19You shall not see a fierce people, a people of a deeper speech than you can perceive; of a stammering tongue, that you cannot understand.

Tziyon, a quiet habitation

33:20Look upon Tziyon, the city of our solemnities: your eyes shall see Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down; not one of the stakes thereof shall ever be removed, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken.

33:21But there the glorious Hashem will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams; wherein shall go no galley with oars, neither shall gallant ship pass thereby.

33:22For Hashem is our judge, Hashem is our lawgiver, Hashem is our king; He will save us.

33:23Your tacklings are loosed; they could not well strengthen their mast, they could not spread the sail: then is the prey of a great spoil divided; the lame take the prey.

33:24And the inhabitant shall not say, “I am sick”: the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
