Isaiah, Chapter 32

A king shall reign in righteousness, the eyes and ears of the people shall be opened, and the vile person and the liberal shall be known for what they are; the women at ease are told to tremble and mourn over the desolate land until the spirit is poured from on high and righteousness brings peace.

32:1Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.

32:2And a man shall be as a hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.

32:3And the eyes of them that see shall not be dim, and the ears of them that hear shall hearken.

32:4The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge, and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly.

32:5The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful.

32:6For the vile person will speak villainy, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against Hashem, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.

32:7The instruments also of the churl are evil: he devises wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaks right.

32:8But the liberal devises liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.

The women at ease

32:9Rise up, you women that are at ease; hear my voice, you careless daughters; give ear unto my speech.

32:10Many days and years shall you be troubled, you careless women: for the vintage shall fail, the gathering shall not come.

32:11Tremble, you women that are at ease; be troubled, you careless ones: strip you, and make you bare, and gird sackcloth upon your loins.

32:12They shall lament for the teats, for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine.

32:13Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers; yea, upon all the houses of joy in the joyous city:

32:14Because the palaces shall be forsaken; the multitude of the city shall be left; the forts and towers shall be for dens for ever, a joy of wild donkeys, a pasture of flocks;

The spirit poured from on high

32:15Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.

32:16Then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness remain in the fruitful field.

32:17And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

32:18And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places;

32:19When it shall hail, coming down on the forest; and the city shall be low in a low place.

32:20Blessed are you that sow beside all waters, that send forth thither the feet of the ox and the donkey.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
