Isaiah, Chapter 3

The Lord, Hashem of hosts, takes away from Yerushalayim and Yehudah every stay and leader, so that children rule and the people oppress one another; Hashem enters into judgment with the elders and princes, and the haughty daughters of Tziyon lose their ornaments and finery.

3:1For, behold, the Lord, Hashem of hosts, does take away from Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) and from Yehudah (Judah) the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water,

3:2The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient,

3:3The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counsellor, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator.

3:4And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them.

3:5And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.

3:6When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, “You have clothing, be you our ruler, and let this ruin be under your hand:”

3:7In that day shall he swear, saying, “I will not be an healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the people.”

Yerushalayim is ruined

3:8For Yerushalayim is ruined, and Yehudah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against Hashem, to provoke the eyes of His glory.

3:9The show of their countenance does witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sedom (Sodom), they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.

3:10Say you to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.

3:11Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.

3:12As for My people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O My people, they which lead you cause you to err, and destroy the way of your paths.

Hashem stands up to judge

3:13Hashem stands up to plead, and stands to judge the people.

3:14Hashem will enter into judgment with the ancients of His people, and the princes thereof: “for you have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.

3:15What mean you that you beat My people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor?” says the Lord Hashem of hosts.

The daughters of Tziyon

3:16Moreover Hashem says, “Because the daughters of Tziyon (Zion) are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:

3:17Therefore the Lord will strike with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Tziyon, and Hashem will discover their secret parts.”

3:18In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon,

3:19The chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers,

3:20The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings,

3:21The rings, and nose jewels,

3:22The changeable suits of apparel, and the mantles, and the wimples, and the crisping pins,

3:23The glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the vails.

3:24And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty.

3:25Your men shall fall by the sword, and your mighty in the war.

3:26And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
