Isaiah, Chapter 11

A rod comes forth from the stem of Yishai, on whom the spirit of Hashem rests and who judges the poor in righteousness; the wolf dwells with the lamb, the earth is full of the knowledge of Hashem, and the Lord gathers the outcasts of Israel and Yehudah from the four corners of the earth.

The rod out of the stem of Yishai

11:1And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Yishai (Jesse), and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

11:2And the spirit of Hashem shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Hashem;

11:3And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of Hashem: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:

11:4But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

11:5And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

The wolf shall dwell with the lamb

11:6The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.

11:7And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

11:8And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den.

11:9They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of Hashem, as the waters cover the sea.

11:10And in that day there shall be a root of Yishai, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.

The outcasts of Israel gathered

11:11And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set His hand again the second time to recover the remnant of His people, which shall be left, from Ashur (Assyria), and from Mitzrayim (Egypt), and from Patros (Pathros), and from Kush (Cush), and from Elam, and from Shin’ar (Shinar), and from Chamat (Hamath), and from the islands of the sea.

11:12And He shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Yehudah (Judah) from the four corners of the earth.

11:13The envy also of Efrayim (Ephraim) shall depart, and the adversaries of Yehudah shall be cut off: Efrayim shall not envy Yehudah, and Yehudah shall not vex Efrayim.

11:14But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Pelishtim (Philistines) toward the west; they shall spoil them of the east together: they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Mo’av (Moab); and the children of Ammon shall obey them.

11:15And Hashem shall utterly destroy the tongue of the sea of Mitzrayim; and with His mighty wind shall He shake His hand over the river, and shall strike it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod.

11:16And there shall be an highway for the remnant of His people, which shall be left, from Ashur; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Mitzrayim.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
