Isaiah, Chapter 10

A woe on those who decree unrighteous decrees and rob the poor; Ashur, the rod of Hashem’s anger, boasts of its own strength and shall be punished; a remnant of Ya’akov shall return to the mighty God; and the enemy marches on Yerushalayim until Hashem of hosts lops the bough.

Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees

10:1Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed;

10:2To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of My people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless!

10:3And what will you do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will you flee for help? and where will you leave your glory?

10:4Without Me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Ashur, the rod of Hashem’s anger

10:5O Ashur (Assyrian), the rod of My anger, and the staff in their hand is My indignation.

10:6I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of My wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

10:7Howbeit he means not so, neither does his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few.

10:8For he says, “Are not my princes altogether kings?

10:9Is not Kalno (Calno) as Karkemish (Carchemish)? is not Chamat (Hamath) as Arpad? is not Shomron (Samaria) as Damesek (Damascus)?

10:10As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel them of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) and of Shomron;

10:11Shall I not, as I have done unto Shomron and her idols, so do to Yerushalayim and her idols?”

10:12Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord has performed His whole work upon mount Tziyon (Zion) and on Yerushalayim, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Ashur, and the glory of his high looks.

10:13For he says, “By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man:

10:14And my hand has found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathers eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.”

10:15Shall the axe boast itself against him that hews therewith? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shakes it? as if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood.

10:16Therefore shall the Lord, Hashem of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory He shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.

10:17And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;

10:18And shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and they shall be as when a standardbearer faints.

10:19And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them.

The remnant shall return

10:20And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Ya’akov (Jacob), shall no more again stay upon him that struck them; but shall stay upon Hashem, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

10:21The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Ya’akov, unto the mighty God.

10:22For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.

10:23For the Lord Hashem of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined, in the midst of all the land.

Be not afraid of Ashur

10:24Therefore thus says the Lord Hashem of hosts, “O My people that dwell in Tziyon, be not afraid of Ashur: he shall strike you with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against you, after the manner of Mitzrayim (Egypt).

10:25For yet a very little while, and the indignation shall cease, and My anger in their destruction.

10:26And Hashem of hosts shall stir up a scourge for him according to the slaughter of Midyan (Midian) at the rock of Orev (Oreb): and as His rod was upon the sea, so shall He lift it up after the manner of Mitzrayim.

10:27And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off your shoulder, and his yoke from off your neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.”

The march on Yerushalayim

10:28He is come to Ayat (Aiath), he is passed to Migron; at Michmas (Michmash) he has laid up his carriages:

10:29They are gone over the passage: they have taken up their lodging at Geva (Geba); Ramah is afraid; Giv’at Shaul (Gibeah of Saul) is fled.

10:30Lift up your voice, O daughter of Gallim: cause it to be heard unto Layish (Laish), O poor Anatot (Anathoth).

10:31Madmenah is removed; the inhabitants of Gevim (Gebim) gather themselves to flee.

10:32As yet shall he remain at Nov (Nob) that day: he shall shake his hand against the mount of the daughter of Tziyon, the hill of Yerushalayim.

10:33Behold, the Lord, Hashem of hosts, shall lop the bough with terror: and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled.

10:34And He shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Levanon (Lebanon) shall fall by a mighty one.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
