Hosea, Chapter 5

Priests, people and king are judged for being a snare at Mitzpah and a net on Tavor; Efrayim and Yehudah shall fall, the shofar sounds in Giv’ah and Ramah, Efrayim turns to Ashur for healing in vain, and Hashem returns to His place until they seek His face.

5:1Hear you this, O priests; and hearken, you house of Israel; and give you ear, O house of the king; for judgment is toward you, because you have been a snare on Mitzpah (Mizpah), and a net spread upon Tavor (Tabor).

5:2And the revolters are profound to make slaughter, though I have been a rebuker of them all.

5:3I know Efrayim (Ephraim), and Israel is not hid from Me: for now, O Efrayim, you commit whoredom, and Israel is defiled.

5:4They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God: for the spirit of whoredoms is in the midst of them, and they have not known Hashem.

5:5And the pride of Israel does testify to his face: therefore shall Israel and Efrayim fall in their iniquity; Yehudah (Judah) also shall fall with them.

5:6They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek Hashem; but they shall not find Him; He has withdrawn Himself from them.

5:7They have dealt treacherously against Hashem: for they have begotten strange children: now shall a month devour them with their portions.

Blow the shofar in Giv’ah

5:8Blow you the shofar (cornet) in Giv’ah (Gibeah), and the trumpet in Ramah: cry aloud at Beit Aven (Beth-aven), after you, O Binyamin (Benjamin).

5:9Efrayim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke: among the tribes of Israel have I made known that which shall surely be.

5:10The princes of Yehudah were like them that remove the bound: therefore I will pour out My wrath upon them like water.

5:11Efrayim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he willingly walked after the commandment.

5:12Therefore will I be unto Efrayim as a moth, and to the house of Yehudah as rottenness.

Efrayim goes to Ashur

5:13When Efrayim saw his sickness, and Yehudah saw his wound, then went Efrayim to Ashur (the Assyrian), and sent to king Yarev (Jareb): yet could he not heal you, nor cure you of your wound.

5:14For I will be unto Efrayim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Yehudah: I, even I, will tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall rescue him.

5:15I will go and return to My place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek My face: in their affliction they will seek Me early.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Hosea they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 1, 2, 11, 12, 13 and 14; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
