Text (469) 608-9944Hosea, Chapter 4
Hashem’s controversy with the land, where there is no truth, mercy or knowledge of God: the people are destroyed for lack of knowledge, priest and people alike go astray after whoredom and idols, and Israel is warned not to come to Gilgal or Beit Aven, for Efrayim is joined to idols.
4:1Hear the word of Hashem, you children of Israel: for Hashem has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
4:2By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood touches blood.
4:3Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwells therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
4:4Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for your people are as they that strive with the priest.
4:5Therefore shall you fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with you in the night, and I will destroy your mother.
4:6My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you shall be no priest to Me: seeing you have forgotten the Torah of your God, I will also forget your children.
4:7As they were increased, so they sinned against Me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.
4:8They eat up the sin of My people, and they set their heart on their iniquity.
4:9And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings.
4:10For they shall eat, and not have enough: they shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to Hashem.
4:11Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.
4:12My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declares unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms has caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.
4:13They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your spouses shall commit adultery.
4:14I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for themselves are separated with whores, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people that does not understand shall fall.
4:15Though you, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Yehudah (Judah) offend; and come not you unto Gilgal, neither go you up to Beit Aven (Beth-aven), nor swear, “Hashem lives.”
4:16For Israel slides back as a backsliding heifer: now Hashem will feed them as a lamb in a large place.
4:17Efrayim (Ephraim) is joined to idols: let him alone.
4:18Their drink is sour: they have committed whoredom continually: her rulers with shame do love, Give you.
4:19The wind has bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Hosea they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 1, 2, 11, 12, 13 and 14; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
