Haggai, Chapter 2

Hashem encourages Zerubavel, Yehoshua and the people: He will shake the heavens, the earth and all nations, and the glory of the latter house shall be greater than the former; the priests are asked about holy and unclean things, blessing is promised from the day of the foundation, and Zerubavel is made as a signet.

2:1In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of Hashem by the prophet Chaggai (Haggai), saying,

2:2“Speak now to Zerubavel (Zerubbabel) the son of Shalti’el (Shealtiel), governor of Yehudah (Judah), and to Yehoshua (Joshua) the son of Yehotzadak (Josedech), the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,

The glory of the latter house

2:3‘Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do you see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?

2:4Yet now be strong, O Zerubavel, says Hashem; and be strong, O Yehoshua, son of Yehotzadak, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land, says Hashem, and work: for I am with you, says Hashem of hosts:

2:5According to the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Mitzrayim (Egypt), so My spirit remains among you: fear you not.

2:6For thus says Hashem of hosts; “Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;

2:7And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, says Hashem of hosts.

2:8The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, says Hashem of hosts.

2:9The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, says Hashem of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, says Hashem of hosts.”’”

Holy and unclean

2:10In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Daryavesh (Darius), came the word of Hashem by Chaggai the prophet, saying,

2:11“Thus says Hashem of hosts; ‘Ask now the priests concerning the Torah, saying,

2:12“If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any food, shall it be holy?”’” And the priests answered and said, “No.”

2:13Then said Chaggai, “If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean?” And the priests answered and said, “It shall be unclean.”

2:14Then answered Chaggai, and said, “So is this people, and so is this nation before Me, says Hashem; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.

From this day I will bless you

2:15And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of Hashem:

2:16Since those days were, when one came to an heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty.

2:17I struck you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet you turned not to Me, says Hashem.

2:18Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of Hashem’s temple was laid, consider it.

2:19Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, has not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.”

Zerubavel as a signet

2:20And again the word of Hashem came unto Chaggai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying,

2:21“Speak to Zerubavel, governor of Yehudah, saying, ‘I will shake the heavens and the earth;

2:22And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.

2:23In that day, says Hashem of hosts, will I take you, O Zerubavel, My servant, the son of She’alti’el, says Hashem, and will make you as a signet: for I have chosen you, says Hashem of hosts.’”

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Haggai they are the same as in most English Bibles.
