Text (469) 608-9944Haggai, Chapter 1
In the second year of Daryavesh the word of Hashem comes by Chaggai to Zerubavel and Yehoshua: the people dwell in cieled houses while Hashem’s house lies waste, and so the heaven withholds its dew; Zerubavel, Yehoshua and the remnant obey, and Hashem stirs up their spirit to work on His house.
1:1In the second year of Daryavesh (Darius) the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of Hashem by Chaggai (Haggai) the prophet unto Zerubavel (Zerubbabel) the son of She’alti’el (Shealtiel), governor of Yehudah (Judah), and to Yehoshua (Joshua) the son of Yehotzadak (Josedech), the high priest, saying,
1:2“Thus speaks Hashem of hosts, saying, ‘This people say, “The time is not come, the time that Hashem’s house should be built.”’”
בכֹּ֥ה אָמַ֛ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת לֵאמֹ֑ר הָעָ֤ם הַזֶּה֙ אָֽמְר֔וּ לֹ֥א עֶת־בֹּ֛א עֶת־בֵּ֥ית יְהוָ֖ה לְהִבָּנֽוֹת׃
1:3Then came the word of Hashem by Chaggai the prophet, saying,
גוַֽיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־יְהוָ֔ה בְּיַד־חַגַּ֥י הַנָּבִ֖יא לֵאמֹֽר׃
1:4“Is it time for you, O you, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste?
דהַעֵ֤ת לָכֶם֙ אַתֶּ֔ם לָשֶׁ֖בֶת בְּבָתֵּיכֶ֣ם סְפוּנִ֑ים וְהַבַּ֥יִת הַזֶּ֖ה חָרֵֽב׃
1:5Now therefore thus says Hashem of hosts; ‘Consider your ways.
הוְעַתָּ֕ה כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת שִׂ֥ימוּ לְבַבְכֶ֖ם עַל־דַּרְכֵיכֶֽם׃
1:6You have sown much, and bring in little; you eat, but you have not enough; you drink, but you are not filled with drink; you clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earns wages earns wages to put it into a bag with holes.’
1:7Thus says Hashem of hosts; ‘Consider your ways.
זכֹּ֥ה אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת שִׂ֥ימוּ לְבַבְכֶ֖ם עַל־דַּרְכֵיכֶֽם׃
1:8Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, says Hashem.
חעֲל֥וּ הָהָ֛ר וַהֲבֵאתֶ֥ם עֵ֖ץ וּבְנ֣וּ הַבָּ֑יִת וְאֶרְצֶה־בּ֥וֹ וְאֶכָּבְדָ֖ה (כתיב ואכבד) אָמַ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃
1:9You looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when you brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? says Hashem of hosts. Because of My house that is waste, and you run every man unto his own house.
1:10Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit.
יעַל־כֵּ֣ן עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם כָּלְא֥וּ שָמַ֖יִם מִטָּ֑ל וְהָאָ֖רֶץ כָּלְאָ֥ה יְבוּלָֽהּ׃
1:11And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the grain, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground brings forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands.’”
1:12Then Zerubavel the son of Shalti’el, and Yehoshua the son of Yehotzadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of Hashem their God, and the words of Chaggai the prophet, as Hashem their God had sent him, and the people did fear before Hashem.
1:13Then spoke Chaggai Hashem’s messenger in Hashem’s message unto the people, saying, “I am with you, says Hashem.”
יגוַ֠יֹּאמֶר חַגַּ֞י מַלְאַ֧ךְ יְהוָ֛ה בְּמַלְאֲכ֥וּת יְהוָ֖ה לָעָ֣ם לֵאמֹ֑ר אֲנִ֥י אִתְּכֶ֖ם נְאֻם־יְהוָֽה׃
1:14And Hashem stirred up the spirit of Zerubavel the son of Shalti’el, governor of Yehudah, and the spirit of Yehoshua the son of Yehotzadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of Hashem of hosts, their God,
1:15In the four and twentieth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Daryavesh the king.
טובְּי֨וֹם עֶשְׂרִ֧ים וְאַרְבָּעָ֛ה לַחֹ֖דֶשׁ בַּשִּׁשִּׁ֑י בִּשְׁנַ֥ת שְׁתַּ֖יִם לְדָרְיָ֥וֶשׁ הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Haggai they are the same as in most English Bibles.
