Genesis, Chapter 7

Hashem tells Noaḥ to enter the ark with his house and the animals; in Noaḥ’s six hundredth year the flood comes, rain falls forty days and nights, the waters cover the mountains, and every living thing on the earth dies.

Into the ark

7:1And Hashem said unto Noaḥ (Noah), “Come, you and all your house, into the ark; for you I have seen righteous before Me in this generation.

7:2Of every clean beast you shall take to you by sevens, the male and his female; and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.

7:3Of the fowl of the air also by sevens, the male and the female, to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.

7:4For in seven more days I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made I will blot out from the face of the earth.”

7:5And Noaḥ did according to all that Hashem commanded him.

7:6And Noaḥ was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

7:7And Noaḥ went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

7:8Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowl, and of everything that creeps upon the ground,

7:9there went in two and two unto Noaḥ into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noaḥ.

The flood begins

7:10And it came to pass after the seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.

7:11In the six hundredth year of Noaḥ’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that same day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

7:12And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

7:13On that very same day Noaḥ, and Shem, and Ḥam (Ham), and Yafet (Japheth), the sons of Noaḥ, and Noaḥ’s wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, entered into the ark;

7:14they, and every beast after its kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth after its kind, and every fowl after its kind, every bird of every sort.

7:15And they went in unto Noaḥ into the ark, two and two of all flesh, in which is the breath of life.

7:16And those that went in went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him; and Hashem shut him in.

The waters prevail

7:17And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bore up the ark, and it was lifted up above the earth.

7:18And the waters prevailed, and increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.

7:19And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high mountains that were under the whole heaven were covered.

7:20Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.

7:21And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth, and every man.

7:22All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, of all that was on the dry land, died.

7:23And every living substance was blotted out which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were blotted out from the earth. And only Noaḥ remained alive, and those who were with him in the ark.

7:24And the waters prevailed upon the earth a hundred and fifty days.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
