Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 6
The sons of God take wives from the daughters of men and Hashem sees the great wickedness of man; Noaḥ finds grace, and God tells him to build an ark of gopher wood and bring his family and two of every living thing into it.
6:1And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
6:2that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all whom they chose.
6:3And Hashem said, “My Spirit shall not always strive with man, for he also is flesh; yet his days shall be a hundred and twenty years.”
6:4There were Nefilim (giants) in the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them; the same became mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
6:5And Hashem saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6:6And Hashem regretted that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him at His heart.
6:7And Hashem said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for I regret that I have made them.”
6:8But Noaḥ (Noah) found grace in the eyes of Hashem.
6:9These are the generations of Noaḥ. Noaḥ was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noaḥ walked with God.
6:10And Noaḥ begot three sons: Shem, Ḥam (Ham), and Yafet (Japheth).
6:11The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
6:12And God looked upon the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth.
6:13And God said unto Noaḥ, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
6:14Make yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make rooms in the ark, and shall cover it inside and outside with pitch.
6:15And this is how you shall make it: the length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.
6:16A window you shall make for the ark, and to a cubit you shall finish it above; and the door of the ark you shall set in its side; with lower, second, and third stories you shall make it.
6:17And I, behold, I am bringing the flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is in the earth shall die.
6:18But with you I will establish My covenant; and you shall come into the ark, you, and your sons, and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.
6:19And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every kind you shall bring into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female.
6:20Of fowl after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind shall come unto you, to keep them alive.
6:21And take unto you of all food that is eaten, and you shall gather it to you; and it shall be for food for you and for them.”
6:22Thus Noaḥ did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
