Ezra, Chapter 1

In the first year of Koresh king of Paras, Hashem stirs up his spirit to proclaim that the house of Hashem in Yerushalayim be built; the heads of Yehudah and Binyamin, the priests and the Levi’im go up, and Koresh brings out the vessels of the house of Hashem by the hand of Sheshbatzar.

1:1Now in the first year of Koresh (Cyrus) king of Paras (Persia), that the word of Hashem by the mouth of Yirmeyah (Jeremiah) might be fulfilled, Hashem stirred up the spirit of Koresh king of Paras, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,

1:2“Thus says Koresh king of Paras, Hashem God of heaven has given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and He has charged me to build Him a house at Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), which is in Yehudah (Judah).

1:3Who is there among you of all His people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Yerushalayim, which is in Yehudah, and build the house of Hashem God of Israel, (He is the God,) which is in Yerushalayim.

1:4And whosoever remains in any place where he sojourns, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the freewill offering for the house of God that is in Yerushalayim.”

The heads of the fathers go up

1:5Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Yehudah and Binyamin (Benjamin), and the priests, and the Levi’im (Levites), with all them whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of Hashem which is in Yerushalayim.

1:6And all they that were about them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, and with beasts, and with precious things, beside all that was willingly offered.

The vessels of the house of Hashem

1:7Also Koresh the king brought forth the vessels of the house of Hashem, which Nevuchadnetzar (Nebuchadnezzar) had brought forth out of Yerushalayim, and had put them in the house of his gods;

1:8Even those did Koresh king of Paras bring forth by the hand of Mitredat (Mithredath) the treasurer, and numbered them unto Sheshbatzar (Sheshbazzar), the prince of Yehudah.

1:9And this is the number of them: thirty chargers of gold, a thousand chargers of silver, nine and twenty knives,

1:10Thirty basins of gold, silver basins of a second sort four hundred and ten, and other vessels a thousand.

1:11All the vessels of gold and of silver were five thousand and four hundred. All these did Sheshbatzar bring up with them of the captivity that were brought up from Bavel (Babylon) unto Yerushalayim.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Ezra they are the same as in most English Bibles.
