Exodus, Chapter 24

שמות כד

Moshe tells the people all the words of Hashem and they answer that they will do them; he writes them, builds an altar and twelve pillars, reads the book of the covenant and sprinkles the blood; the elders see the God of Yisrael, and Moshe goes up into the cloud for forty days and forty nights.

The blood of the covenant

24:1And He said unto Moshe (Moses), “Come up unto Hashem, you, and Aharon (Aaron), Nadav (Nadab), and Avihu (Abihu), and seventy of the elders of Yisrael (Israel); and worship afar off.

אוְאֶל־מֹשֶׁ֨ה אָמַ֜ר עֲלֵ֣ה אֶל־יְהוָ֗ה אַתָּה֙ וְאַהֲרֹן֙ נָדָ֣ב וַאֲבִיה֔וּא וְשִׁבְעִ֖ים מִזִּקְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְהִשְׁתַּחֲוִיתֶ֖ם מֵרָחֹֽק׃

24:2And Moshe alone shall come near Hashem; but they shall not come near; neither shall the people go up with him.”

בוְנִגַּ֨שׁ מֹשֶׁ֤ה לְבַדּוֹ֙ אֶל־יְהוָ֔ה וְהֵ֖ם לֹ֣א יִגָּ֑שׁוּ וְהָעָ֕ם לֹ֥א יַעֲל֖וּ עִמּֽוֹ׃

24:3And Moshe came and told the people all the words of Hashem, and all the judgments; and all the people answered with one voice, and said, “All the words which Hashem has said will we do.”

24:4And Moshe wrote all the words of Hashem, and rose up early in the morning, and built an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Yisrael.

24:5And he sent young men of the children of Yisrael, who offered burnt offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto Hashem.

הוַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח אֶֽת־נַעֲרֵי֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיַּֽעֲל֖וּ עֹלֹ֑ת וַֽיִּזְבְּח֞וּ זְבָחִ֧ים שְׁלָמִ֛ים לַיהוָ֖ה פָּרִֽים׃

24:6And Moshe took half of the blood, and put it in basins; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar.

ווַיִּקַּ֤ח מֹשֶׁה֙ חֲצִ֣י הַדָּ֔ם וַיָּ֖שֶׂם בָּאַגָּנֹ֑ת וַחֲצִ֣י הַדָּ֔ם זָרַ֖ק עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃

24:7And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the hearing of the people; and they said, “All that Hashem has said will we do, and be obedient.”

זוַיִּקַּח֙ סֵ֣פֶר הַבְּרִ֔ית וַיִּקְרָ֖א בְּאָזְנֵ֣י הָעָ֑ם וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ כֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה נַעֲשֶׂ֥ה וְנִשְׁמָֽע׃

24:8And Moshe took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant, which Hashem has made with you concerning all these words.”

חוַיִּקַּ֤ח מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶת־הַדָּ֔ם וַיִּזְרֹ֖ק עַל־הָעָ֑ם וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הִנֵּ֤ה דַֽם־הַבְּרִית֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר כָּרַ֤ת יְהוָה֙ עִמָּכֶ֔ם עַ֥ל כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃

The elders see the God of Yisrael

24:9Then went up Moshe, and Aharon, Nadav, and Avihu, and seventy of the elders of Yisrael;

טוַיַּ֥עַל מֹשֶׁ֖ה וְאַהֲרֹ֑ן נָדָב֙ וַאֲבִיה֔וּא וְשִׁבְעִ֖ים מִזִּקְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

24:10and they saw the God of Yisrael; and there was under His feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the very heaven in its clearness.

יוַיִּרְא֕וּ אֵ֖ת אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְתַ֣חַת רַגְלָ֗יו כְּמַעֲשֵׂה֙ לִבְנַ֣ת הַסַּפִּ֔יר וּכְעֶ֥צֶם הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם לָטֹֽהַר׃

24:11And upon the nobles of the children of Yisrael He did not lay His hand; also they saw God, and ate and drank.

יאוְאֶל־אֲצִילֵי֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לֹ֥א שָׁלַ֖ח יָד֑וֹ וַֽיֶּחֱזוּ֙ אֶת־הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיֹּאכְל֖וּ וַיִּשְׁתּֽוּ׃

Moshe goes up into the mount

24:12And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Come up to Me into the mount, and be there; and I will give you tablets of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that you may teach them.”

24:13And Moshe rose up, and his minister Yehoshua (Joshua); and Moshe went up into the mount of God.

יגוַיָּ֣קָם מֹשֶׁ֔ה וִיהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ מְשָׁרְת֑וֹ וַיַּ֥עַל מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶל־הַ֥ר הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃

24:14And he said unto the elders, “Wait here for us, until we come again unto you; and behold, Aharon and Ḥur (Hur) are with you; if any man has any matters to do, let him come unto them.”

24:15And Moshe went up into the mount, and the cloud covered the mount.

טווַיַּ֥עַל מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶל־הָהָ֑ר וַיְכַ֥ס הֶעָנָ֖ן אֶת־הָהָֽר׃

24:16And the glory of Hashem abode upon mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days; and on the seventh day He called unto Moshe out of the midst of the cloud.

טזוַיִּשְׁכֹּ֤ן כְּבוֹד־יְהוָה֙ עַל־הַ֣ר סִינַ֔י וַיְכַסֵּ֥הוּ הֶעָנָ֖ן שֵׁ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֑ים וַיִּקְרָ֧א אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֛ה בַּיּ֥וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֖י מִתּ֥וֹךְ הֶעָנָֽן׃

24:17And the sight of the glory of Hashem was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Yisrael.

יזוּמַרְאֵה֙ כְּב֣וֹד יְהוָ֔ה כְּאֵ֥שׁ אֹכֶ֖לֶת בְּרֹ֣אשׁ הָהָ֑ר לְעֵינֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

24:18And Moshe went into the midst of the cloud, and went up into the mount; and Moshe was in the mount forty days and forty nights.

יחוַיָּבֹ֥א מֹשֶׁ֛ה בְּת֥וֹךְ הֶעָנָ֖ן וַיַּ֣עַל אֶל־הָהָ֑ר וַיְהִ֤י מֹשֶׁה֙ בָּהָ֔ר אַרְבָּעִ֣ים י֔וֹם וְאַרְבָּעִ֖ים לָֽיְלָה׃

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
