Esther, Chapter 6

On a sleepless night the king hears from the book of the chronicles how Mordechai told of the plot against him; Haman, come to ask for Mordechai’s hanging, is made to array Mordechai in royal apparel and lead him through the city, and Zeresh and his wise men foretell Haman’s fall.

6:1On that night could not the king sleep, and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.

6:2And it was found written, that Mordechai (Mordecai) had told of Bigtana (Bigthana) and Teresh, two of the king’s chamberlains, the keepers of the door, who sought to lay hand on the king Achashverosh (Ahasuerus).

6:3And the king said, “What honour and dignity has been done to Mordechai for this?” Then said the king’s servants that ministered unto him, “There is nothing done for him.”

Haman honours Mordechai

6:4And the king said, “Who is in the court?” Now Haman was come into the outward court of the king’s house, to speak unto the king to hang Mordechai on the gallows that he had prepared for him.

6:5And the king’s servants said unto him, “Behold, Haman stands in the court.” And the king said, “Let him come in.”

6:6So Haman came in. And the king said unto him, “What shall be done unto the man whom the king delights to honour?” Now Haman thought in his heart, “To whom would the king delight to do honour more than to myself?”

6:7And Haman answered the king, “For the man whom the king delights to honour,

6:8Let the royal apparel be brought which the king uses to wear, and the horse that the king rides upon, and the crown royal which is set upon his head:

6:9And let this apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king’s most noble princes, that they may array the man withal whom the king delights to honour, and bring him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaim before him, ‘Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honour.’”

6:10Then the king said to Haman, “Make haste, and take the apparel and the horse, as you have said, and do even so to Mordechai the Jew, that sits at the king’s gate: let nothing fail of all that you have spoken.”

6:11Then took Haman the apparel and the horse, and arrayed Mordechai, and brought him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaimed before him, “Thus shall it be done unto the man whom the king delights to honour.”

Haman’s fall foretold

6:12And Mordechai came again to the king’s gate. But Haman hasted to his house mourning, and having his head covered.

6:13And Haman told Zeresh his wife and all his friends every thing that had befallen him. Then said his wise men and Zeresh his wife unto him, “If Mordechai be of the seed of the Jews, before whom you have begun to fall, you shall not prevail against him, but shall surely fall before him.”

6:14And while they were yet talking with him, came the king’s chamberlains, and hasted to bring Haman unto the banquet that Ester (Esther) had prepared.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Esther they are the same as in most English Bibles.
