Esther, Chapter 5

On the third day Ester stands in the inner court and finds favour, and she invites the king and Haman to a banquet and then to a second; Haman goes out glad but is filled with indignation at Mordechai in the king’s gate, and at the counsel of Zeresh he has a gallows fifty cubits high made.

5:1Now it came to pass on the third day, that Ester (Esther) put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the king’s house, over against the king’s house: and the king sat upon his royal throne in the royal house, over against the gate of the house.

5:2And it was so, when the king saw Ester the queen standing in the court, that she obtained favour in his sight: and the king held out to Ester the golden sceptre that was in his hand. So Ester drew near, and touched the top of the sceptre.

5:3Then said the king unto her, “What will you, queen Ester? and what is your request? it shall be even given you to the half of the kingdom.”

5:4And Ester answered, “If it seem good unto the king, let the king and Haman come this day unto the banquet that I have prepared for him.”

5:5Then the king said, “Cause Haman to make haste, that he may do as Ester has said.” So the king and Haman came to the banquet that Ester had prepared.

Ester’s banquet

5:6And the king said unto Ester at the banquet of wine, “What is your petition? and it shall be granted you: and what is your request? even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed.”

5:7Then answered Ester, and said, “My petition and my request is;

5:8If I have found favour in the sight of the king, and if it please the king to grant my petition, and to perform my request, let the king and Haman come to the banquet that I shall prepare for them, and I will do tomorrow as the king has said.”

Haman’s anger at Mordechai

5:9Then went Haman forth that day joyful and with a glad heart: but when Haman saw Mordechai (Mordecai) in the king’s gate, that he stood not up, nor moved for him, he was full of indignation against Mordechai.

5:10Nevertheless Haman refrained himself: and when he came home, he sent and called for his friends, and Zeresh his wife.

5:11And Haman told them of the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the things wherein the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king.

5:12Haman said moreover, “Yea, Ester the queen did let no man come in with the king unto the banquet that she had prepared but myself; and tomorrow am I invited unto her also with the king.

5:13Yet all this avails me nothing, so long as I see Mordechai the Jew sitting at the king’s gate.”

5:14Then said Zeresh his wife and all his friends unto him, “Let a gallows be made of fifty cubits high, and tomorrow speak you unto the king that Mordechai may be hanged thereon: then go you in merrily with the king unto the banquet.” And the thing pleased Haman; and he caused the gallows to be made.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Esther they are the same as in most English Bibles.
