Deuteronomy, Chapter 4

Moshe urges Yisrael to keep the statutes without adding or taking away, recalls the voice from the fire at Ḥorev, warns against making any graven image, foretells scattering among the peoples and return to Hashem, declares that Hashem alone is God, and sets apart three cities beyond the Yarden.

Keep the statutes and judgments

4:1“Now therefore hearken, O Yisrael (Israel), unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, to do them, that you may live, and go in and possess the land which Hashem, the God of your fathers, gives you.

4:2You shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall you diminish anything from it, that you may keep the commandments of Hashem your God which I command you.

4:3Your eyes have seen what Hashem did because of Ba’al Pe’or (Baal-peor); for all the men that followed Ba’al Pe’or, Hashem your God has destroyed them from among you.

4:4But you that held fast unto Hashem your God are alive every one of you this day.

4:5Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as Hashem my God commanded me, that you should do so in the land into which you go to possess it.

4:6Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who shall hear all these statutes, and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’

4:7For what nation is there so great, that has God so near unto them, as Hashem our God is in all things that we call upon Him for?

4:8And what nation is there so great, that has statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?

Remember Ḥorev and make no image

4:9Only take heed to yourself, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your sons, and your sons’ sons;

4:10the day that you stood before Hashem your God in Ḥorev (Horeb), when Hashem said unto me, ‘Gather Me the people together, and I will make them hear My words, that they may learn to fear Me all the days that they live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.’

4:11And you came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness.

4:12And Hashem spoke unto you out of the midst of the fire; you heard the voice of the words, but saw no form; only you heard a voice.

4:13And He declared unto you His covenant, which He commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and He wrote them upon two tablets of stone.

4:14And Hashem commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that you might do them in the land into which you go over to possess it.

4:15Take therefore good heed unto yourselves; for you saw no manner of form on the day that Hashem spoke unto you in Ḥorev out of the midst of the fire;

4:16lest you corrupt yourselves, and make yourselves a graven image, the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female,

4:17the likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flies in the air,

4:18the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth;

4:19and lest you lift up your eyes unto heaven, and when you see the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and worship them, and serve them, which Hashem your God has allotted unto all the peoples under the whole heaven.

4:20But Hashem has taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, out of Mitzrayim (Egypt), to be unto Him a people of inheritance, as you are this day.

4:21Furthermore Hashem was angry with me for your sakes, and swore that I should not go over the Yarden (Jordan), and that I should not go in unto that good land, which Hashem your God gives you for an inheritance;

4:22but I must die in this land, I must not go over the Yarden; but you shall go over, and possess that good land.

4:23Take heed unto yourselves, lest you forget the covenant of Hashem your God, which He made with you, and make yourselves a graven image, the likeness of anything, which Hashem your God has forbidden you.

4:24For Hashem your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

Scattered among the peoples

4:25When you beget children, and children’s children, and you have remained long in the land, and corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, the likeness of anything, and do evil in the sight of Hashem your God, to provoke Him to anger,

4:26I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that you shall soon utterly perish from off the land into which you go over the Yarden to possess it; you shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.

4:27And Hashem shall scatter you among the peoples, and you shall be left few in number among the nations, where Hashem shall lead you.

4:29But if from there you shall seek Hashem your God, you shall find Him, if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.

4:30When you are in tribulation, and all these things have come upon you, even in the latter days, if you turn to Hashem your God, and are obedient unto His voice;

4:31for Hashem your God is a merciful God; He will not forsake you, neither destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which He swore unto them.

Hashem, he is God

4:32For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and from the one end of heaven unto the other, whether there has been any such thing as this great thing is, or has been heard like it?

4:33Did ever a people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and live?

4:34Or has God tried to go and take Himself a nation from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that Hashem your God did for you in Mitzrayim before your eyes?

4:35Unto you it was shown, that you might know that Hashem, He is God; there is none else beside Him.

4:36Out of heaven He made you hear His voice, that He might instruct you; and upon earth He showed you His great fire; and you heard His words out of the midst of the fire.

4:37And because He loved your fathers, therefore He chose their seed after them, and brought you out in His sight with His mighty power out of Mitzrayim,

4:38to drive out nations from before you greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as it is this day.

4:39Know therefore this day, and lay it to your heart, that Hashem, He is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath; there is none else.

4:40You shall keep therefore His statutes, and His commandments, which I command you this day, that it may go well with you, and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days upon the land, which Hashem your God gives you, for ever.”

Three cities beyond the Yarden

4:41Then Moshe (Moses) set apart three cities on the other side of the Yarden toward the sunrising,

4:42that the slayer might flee there, who should kill his neighbor unawares, and hated him not in times past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live:

4:43Betzer (Bezer) in the wilderness, in the plain country, of the Reuveni (Reubenites); and Ramot (Ramoth) in Gil’ad (Gilead), of the Gadi (Gadites); and Golan in Bashan, of the Menashi (Manassites).

The law set before Yisrael

4:44And this is the law which Moshe set before the children of Yisrael;

4:45these are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which Moshe spoke unto the children of Yisrael, when they came forth out of Mitzrayim,

4:46on the other side of the Yarden, in the valley over against Beit Pe’or, in the land of Siḥon (Sihon) king of the Emori (Amorites), who dwelt at Ḥeshbon (Heshbon), whom Moshe and the children of Yisrael struck, when they came forth out of Mitzrayim;

4:47and they possessed his land, and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Emori, who were on the other side of the Yarden toward the sunrising;

4:48from Aro’er (Aroer), which is by the edge of the river Arnon, even unto mount Si’on (Sion), which is Ḥermon (Hermon),

4:49and all the plain on the other side of the Yarden eastward, even unto the sea of the plain, under the springs of Pisgah.

The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 28 and 29; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
