Text (469) 608-9944Deuteronomy, Chapter 3
Yisrael defeats Og king of Bashan at Edre’i and takes his sixty cities; Moshe gives the land beyond the Yarden to the Reuveni, the Gadi and half the tribe of Menasheh, charges them and Yehoshua, and pleads to cross over, but Hashem lets him only see the land from Pisgah.
3:1“Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan; and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edre’i (Edrei).
3:2And Hashem said unto me, ‘Fear him not; for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into your hand; and you shall do unto him as you did unto Siḥon (Sihon) king of the Emori, who dwelt at Ḥeshbon (Heshbon).’
3:3So Hashem our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people; and we struck him until none was left to him remaining.
3:4And we took all his cities at that time; there was not a city which we did not take from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argov (Argob), the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
3:5All these cities were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many unwalled towns.
3:6And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Siḥon king of Ḥeshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city.
3:7But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves.
3:8And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Emori the land that was on the other side of the Yarden (Jordan), from the river Arnon unto mount Ḥermon (Hermon)
3:9(Ḥermon the Tzidonim call Siryon, and the Emori call it Senir),
3:10all the cities of the plain, and all Gil’ad (Gilead), and all Bashan, unto Salchah and Edre’i, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
3:11For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of the Refa’im (Rephaim); behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbah of the children of Ammon? Nine cubits was its length, and four cubits its breadth, after the cubit of a man.
3:12And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aro’er (Aroer), which is by the river Arnon, and half mount Gil’ad, and its cities, I gave unto the Reuveni (Reubenites) and to the Gadi (Gadites).
3:13And the rest of Gil’ad, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave unto the half tribe of Menasheh (Manasseh); all the region of Argov, with all Bashan, which is called the land of Refa’im.
3:14Ya’ir the son of Menasheh took all the region of Argov unto the border of the Geshuri (Geshurites) and the Ma’achati (Maachathites); and called them, even Bashan, after his own name, Ḥavvot Ya’ir (Havoth-jair), unto this day.
3:15And I gave Gil’ad unto Machir.
3:16And unto the Reuveni and unto the Gadi I gave from Gil’ad even unto the river Arnon, the middle of the valley and its border, even unto the river Yabbok (Jabbok), which is the border of the children of Ammon;
3:17the plain also, and the Yarden and its border, from Kinneret (Chinnereth) even unto the sea of the plain, the Salt Sea, under Ashdot HaPisgah (Ashdoth-pisgah) eastward.
3:18And I commanded you at that time, saying, ‘Hashem your God has given you this land to possess it; you shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Yisrael (Israel), all that are fit for the war.
3:19But your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle (for I know that you have much cattle), shall abide in your cities which I have given you,
3:20until Hashem has given rest unto your brethren, as well as unto you, and until they also possess the land which Hashem your God gives them beyond the Yarden; and then you shall return every man unto his possession, which I have given you.’
3:21And I commanded Yehoshua (Joshua) at that time, saying, ‘Your eyes have seen all that Hashem your God has done unto these two kings; so shall Hashem do unto all the kingdoms into which you are passing.
3:22You shall not fear them; for Hashem your God, He shall fight for you.’”
3:23“And I besought Hashem at that time, saying,
3:24‘O Lord Hashem, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness, and Your mighty hand; for what god is there in heaven or on earth, that can do according to Your works, and according to Your mighty acts?
3:25I pray You, let me go over, and see the good land that is beyond the Yarden, that goodly mountain, and Levanon (Lebanon).’
3:26But Hashem was angry with me for your sakes, and would not hear me; and Hashem said unto me, ‘Let it suffice you; speak no more unto Me of this matter.
3:27Go up to the top of Pisgah, and lift up your eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold it with your eyes; for you shall not go over this Yarden.
3:28But charge Yehoshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him; for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which you shall see.’
3:29So we abode in the valley over against Beit Pe’or (Beth-peor).”

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 28 and 29; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
