Text (469) 608-9944Deuteronomy, Chapter 30
Moshe tells that when Yisrael returns to Hashem from among the nations, He will gather them, bring them into the land and circumcise their heart; the commandment is not far off but very near; and he sets before them life and death, urging them to choose life.
30:1“And it shall come to pass, when all these things have come upon you, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before you, and you shall call them to mind among all the nations, where Hashem your God has driven you,
30:2and shall return unto Hashem your God, and shall obey His voice according to all that I command you this day, you and your children, with all your heart, and with all your soul,
30:3that then Hashem your God will turn your captivity, and have compassion upon you, and will return and gather you from all the nations, where Hashem your God has scattered you.
30:4If any of you are driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from there will Hashem your God gather you, and from there will He fetch you.
30:5And Hashem your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and He will do you good, and multiply you above your fathers.
30:6And Hashem your God will circumcise your heart, and the heart of your seed, to love Hashem your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, that you may live.
30:7And Hashem your God will put all these curses upon your enemies, and on those that hate you, who persecuted you.
30:8And you shall return and obey the voice of Hashem, and do all His commandments which I command you this day.
30:9And Hashem your God will make you plenteous in every work of your hand, in the fruit of your body, and in the fruit of your cattle, and in the fruit of your land, for good; for Hashem will again rejoice over you for good, as He rejoiced over your fathers,
30:10if you shall hearken unto the voice of Hashem your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if you turn unto Hashem your God with all your heart, and with all your soul.
30:11For this commandment which I command you this day, it is not hidden from you, neither is it far off.
30:12It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?’
30:13Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?’
30:14But the word is very near unto you, in your mouth, and in your heart, that you may do it.
30:15See, I have set before you this day life and good, and death and evil,
30:16in that I command you this day to love Hashem your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and Hashem your God shall bless you in the land where you go to possess it.
30:17But if your heart turns away, so that you will not hear, but shall be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them,
30:18I declare unto you this day, that you shall surely perish, and that you shall not prolong your days upon the land, where you pass over the Yarden (Jordan) to go to possess it.
30:19I call heaven and earth to witness this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your seed may live,
30:20that you may love Hashem your God, and that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling unto Him; for He is your life, and the length of your days; that you may dwell in the land which Hashem swore unto your fathers, to Avraham (Abraham), to Yitzḥak (Isaac), and to Yaakov (Jacob), to give them.”
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 28 and 29; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
