Text (469) 608-9944Deuteronomy, Chapter 29
Moshe recalls the wonders in Mitzrayim, the forty years in the wilderness and the defeat of Siḥon and Og, and gathers all Yisrael to enter the covenant, warning of a root of gall and wormwood and the land laid waste like Sedom and Amorah; the secret things belong to Hashem.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verses 1–28 here are 29:2–29 in most English Bibles. Verse 29:1 of most English Bibles is 28:69 here.
29:1And Moshe (Moses) called unto all Yisrael (Israel), and said unto them, “You have seen all that Hashem did before your eyes in the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt) unto Par’oh (Pharaoh), and unto all his servants, and unto all his land;
29:2the great trials which your eyes have seen, the signs, and those great miracles.
29:3Yet Hashem has not given you a heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.
29:4And I have led you forty years in the wilderness; your clothes have not grown old upon you, and your shoe has not grown old upon your foot.
29:5You have not eaten bread, neither have you drunk wine or strong drink, that you might know that I am Hashem your God.
29:6And when you came unto this place, Siḥon (Sihon) the king of Ḥeshbon (Heshbon), and Og the king of Bashan, came out against us unto battle, and we struck them.
29:7And we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance unto the Reuveni (Reubenites), and to the Gadi (Gadites), and to the half tribe of Menasheh (Manasseh).
29:8Keep therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that you may prosper in all that you do.”
29:9“You stand this day all of you before Hashem your God: your captains of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, with all the men of Yisrael,
29:10your little ones, your wives, and your stranger that is in your camp, from the hewer of your wood unto the drawer of your water,
29:11that you should enter into covenant with Hashem your God, and into His oath, which Hashem your God makes with you this day,
29:12that He may establish you today for a people unto Himself, and that He may be unto you a God, as He has said unto you, and as He has sworn unto your fathers, to Avraham (Abraham), to Yitzḥak (Isaac), and to Yaakov (Jacob).
29:13Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath,

29:14but with him that stands here with us this day before Hashem our God, and also with him that is not here with us this day
29:15(for you know how we have dwelt in the land of Mitzrayim, and how we came through the nations which you passed by;
29:16and you have seen their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were among them),
29:17lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turns away this day from Hashem our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; lest there should be among you a root that bears gall and wormwood;
29:18and it come to pass, when he hears the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, ‘I shall have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart, to add drunkenness to thirst.’
29:19Hashem will not spare him, but then the anger of Hashem and His jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and Hashem shall blot out his name from under heaven.
29:20And Hashem shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Yisrael, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this book of the law.
29:21So that the generation to come of your children that shall rise up after you, and the stranger that shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses which Hashem has laid upon it,
29:22and that the whole land of it is brimstone, and salt, and burning, that it is not sown, nor bears, nor any grass grows in it, like the overthrow of Sedom (Sodom) and Amorah (Gomorrah), Admah and Tzevoyim (Zeboim), which Hashem overthrew in His anger, and in His wrath,
29:23all the nations shall say, ‘Why has Hashem done thus unto this land? What means the heat of this great anger?’
29:24Then men shall say, ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of Hashem, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them forth out of the land of Mitzrayim;
29:25for they went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods whom they did not know, and whom He had not given unto them.

29:26And the anger of Hashem was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this book.
29:27And Hashem rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.’

29:28The secret things belong unto Hashem our God; but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 28 and 29; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
