Text (469) 608-9944Deuteronomy, Chapter 11
Moshe calls Yisrael to love Hashem and remember His acts against Mitzrayim and against Datan and Aviram, describes the land watered by the rain of heaven, promises rain for obedience, commands them to lay up His words, and sets before them the blessing on mount Gerizim and the curse on mount Eival.
11:1“Therefore you shall love Hashem your God, and keep His charge, and His statutes, and His judgments, and His commandments, always.
11:2And know this day — for I do not speak with your children, who have not known and who have not seen the chastisement of Hashem your God, His greatness, His mighty hand, and His outstretched arm,
11:3and His signs, and His acts, which He did in the midst of Mitzrayim (Egypt) unto Pharaoh the king of Mitzrayim, and unto all his land;
11:4and what He did unto the army of Mitzrayim, unto their horses and to their chariots; how He made the water of Yam Suf (the Red sea) to overflow them as they pursued after you, and how Hashem has destroyed them unto this day;
11:5and what He did unto you in the wilderness, until you came into this place;
11:6and what He did unto Datan (Dathan) and Aviram (Abiram), the sons of Eliav (Eliab), the son of Reuven (Reuben): how the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and their tents, and all the substance that was in their possession, in the midst of all Yisrael (Israel);
11:7but your eyes have seen all the great acts of Hashem which He did.
11:8Therefore you shall keep all the commandments which I command you this day, that you may be strong, and go in and possess the land, which you go over to possess;
11:9and that you may prolong your days in the land, which Hashem swore unto your fathers to give unto them and to their seed, a land flowing with milk and honey.
11:10For the land, which you go in to possess, is not as the land of Mitzrayim, from which you came out, where you sowed your seed, and watered it with your foot, as a garden of herbs;
11:11but the land, which you go over to possess, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinks water of the rain of heaven;
11:12a land which Hashem your God cares for; the eyes of Hashem your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.
11:13And it shall come to pass, if you shall hearken diligently unto My commandments which I command you this day, to love Hashem your God, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul,
11:14that I will give the rain of your land in its due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your grain, and your wine, and your oil.
11:15And I will send grass in your fields for your cattle, that you may eat and be full.
11:16Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them;
11:17and then the wrath of Hashem be kindled against you, and He shut up the heaven, so that there is no rain, and the land does not yield her fruit; and you perish quickly from off the good land which Hashem gives you.
11:18Therefore you shall lay up these My words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.
11:19And you shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.
11:20And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house, and upon your gates,
11:21that your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which Hashem swore unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.
11:22For if you shall diligently keep all these commandments which I command you, to do them, to love Hashem your God, to walk in all His ways, and to cling unto Him,
11:23then Hashem will drive out all these nations from before you, and you shall possess greater and mightier nations than yourselves.
11:24Every place on which the sole of your foot shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness and the Levanon (Lebanon), from the river, the river Perat (Euphrates), even unto the uttermost sea shall your border be.
11:25No man shall be able to stand before you; Hashem your God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you upon all the land that you shall tread upon, as He has spoken unto you.”
11:26“Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse:
11:27the blessing, if you hearken unto the commandments of Hashem your God, which I command you this day;
11:28and the curse, if you will not hearken unto the commandments of Hashem your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which you have not known.
11:29And it shall come to pass, when Hashem your God has brought you in unto the land which you go to possess, that you shall put the blessing upon mount Gerizim, and the curse upon mount Eival (Ebal).
11:30Are they not on the other side of the Yarden (Jordan), beyond the way where the sun goes down, in the land of the Kena’ani (Canaanites), who dwell in the plain opposite Gilgal, beside the plains of Moreh?
11:31For you shall pass over the Yarden to go in to possess the land which Hashem your God gives you, and you shall possess it, and dwell in it.
11:32And you shall observe to do all the statutes and judgments which I set before you this day.”

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 28 and 29; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
