Text (469) 608-9944Deuteronomy, Chapter 10
Moshe hews two new tables and an ark, and Hashem writes the ten commandments again; Aharon dies at Moserah and Elazar serves in his place; the tribe of Levi is set apart; and Moshe tells Yisrael what Hashem requires: to fear, love and serve Him and to love the stranger.
10:1At that time Hashem said unto me, ‘Hew yourself two tables of stone like the first, and come up unto Me into the mount, and make yourself an ark of wood.
10:2And I will write on the tables the words that were on the first tables which you broke, and you shall put them in the ark.’
10:3So I made an ark of acacia wood, and hewed two tables of stone like the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in my hand.
10:4And He wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten commandments, which Hashem spoke unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly; and Hashem gave them unto me.
10:5And I turned and came down from the mount, and put the tables in the ark which I had made; and there they are, as Hashem commanded me.
10:6And the children of Yisrael (Israel) journeyed from Be’erot Benei Ya’akan (Beeroth of the children of Jaakan) to Moserah (Mosera); there Aharon (Aaron) died, and there he was buried; and Elazar (Eleazar) his son ministered in the priest’s office in his place.
10:7From there they journeyed unto Gudgodah; and from Gudgodah to Yotvatah (Jotbath), a land of brooks of water.
10:8At that time Hashem separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of Hashem, to stand before Hashem to minister unto Him, and to bless in His name, unto this day.
10:9Therefore Levi has no portion nor inheritance with his brethren; Hashem is his inheritance, as Hashem your God promised him.
10:10And I stayed in the mount, as at the first time, forty days and forty nights; and Hashem hearkened unto me at that time also; Hashem would not destroy you.
10:11And Hashem said unto me, ‘Arise, go on your journey before the people, that they may go in and possess the land which I swore unto their fathers to give unto them.’
10:12And now, Yisrael, what does Hashem your God require of you, but to fear Hashem your God, to walk in all His ways, and to love Him, and to serve Hashem your God with all your heart and with all your soul,
10:13to keep the commandments of Hashem, and His statutes, which I command you this day for your good?
10:14Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens belong to Hashem your God, the earth also, with all that is in it.
10:15Only in your fathers did Hashem delight, to love them, and He chose their seed after them, you above all peoples, as it is this day.
10:16Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.
10:17For Hashem your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, the mighty and the awesome, who does not regard persons, nor take a bribe.
10:18He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the stranger, giving him food and clothing.
10:19Love therefore the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt).
10:20You shall fear Hashem your God; Him shall you serve, and to Him shall you cling, and by His name shall you swear.
10:21He is your praise, and He is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome things, which your eyes have seen.
10:22Your fathers went down into Mitzrayim with threescore and ten persons; and now Hashem your God has made you as the stars of heaven for multitude.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 28 and 29; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
