Text (469) 608-9944Amos, Chapter 9
Amos sees the Lord standing upon the altar, and none can flee from Him, though they dig into hell or climb to heaven; the sinful kingdom is destroyed but not utterly the house of Ya’akov, and Hashem raises up the tabernacle of David and plants Israel upon its land for ever.
9:1I saw the Lord standing upon the altar: and He said, “Strike the lintel of the door, that the posts may shake: and cut them in the head, all of them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword: he that flees of them shall not flee away, and he that escapes of them shall not be delivered.
9:2Though they dig into hell, thence shall My hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down:
9:3And though they hide themselves in the top of Karmel (Carmel), I will search and take them out thence; and though they be hid from My sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them:
9:4And though they go into captivity before their enemies, thence will I command the sword, and it shall slay them: and I will set My eyes upon them for evil, and not for good.”
9:5And the Lord Hashem of hosts is He that touches the land, and it shall melt, and all that dwell therein shall mourn: and it shall rise up wholly like a flood; and shall be drowned, as by the flood of Mitzrayim (Egypt).
9:6It is He that builds His stories in the heaven, and has founded His troop in the earth; He that calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out upon the face of the earth: Hashem is His name.
9:7Are you not as children of the Kushim (Ethiopians) unto Me, O children of Israel? says Hashem. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Mitzrayim? and the Pelishtim (Philistines) from Kaftor (Caphtor), and Aram (the Syrians) from Kir?
9:8Behold, the eyes of the Lord Hashem are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Ya’akov (Jacob), says Hashem.
9:9For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as grain is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.
9:10All the sinners of My people shall die by the sword, which say, “The evil shall not overtake nor go before us.”
9:11In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:
9:12That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by My name, says Hashem that does this.
9:13Behold, the days come, says Hashem, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that sows seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt.
9:14And I will bring again the captivity of My people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.
9:15And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, says Hashem your God.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Amos they are the same as in most English Bibles.
